Reading culture has not been given the attention it deserves.

Báo Công thươngBáo Công thương27/08/2024

As a senior leader with extensive experience in large corporations and also an educator researching the art of practical applied leadership, I have worked in many businesses and interacted with hundreds of business owners. I have observed that: "Most business owners do not, or have not yet, developed a reading culture, rendering the applications of high-level candidates ineffective... The minimum level of respect for candidates is not emphasized or prioritized!"

With the constant changes of the "VUCA era," the management mindset of a mercenary or nouveau riche will soon be eliminated from the labor market in Vietnam....

Why do business owners rarely read the resumes of senior-level candidates?

"Busy"—a dry adjective used to justify actions that lack integrity, courage, and a certain degree of authoritarianism—is often employed by a significant portion of business owners in Vietnam. The reality is, when people recognize something as essential, they naturally find time for it. Reading the application of a high-level candidate, is that really considered a "superfluous activity" within the company? I'm certain that's the management mindset of a mere merchant!

In university lecture halls, diligent and responsible lecturers like us have been working tirelessly day and night to train the "future generation," meticulously crafting every word and argument in their application materials. We provide thorough guidance on how to write and structure application materials to ensure they are polished and demonstrate absolute respect for the company and the employer. However, business owners think the opposite, engaging in actions that deserve condemnation and criticism...

Is recruitment a "one-way" process? Is it true that only one side shows respect, while the other remains indifferent, assuming, "You need us"? In reality, many business owners with this mindset exist, and employee turnover in their companies is significant; the "coming and going" of staff is a frequent occurrence. It seems they don't mind, considering it a natural and inevitable "rule" of the game...

It must be acknowledged that it is absolutely impossible to change the mindset of successful business owners in the marketplace, with their philosophy of life and work being "unconventional and unique" (excerpt from the book "Merchants, Nouveau Riche, and Entrepreneurs: A Different Management Philosophy"). They don't care to listen to anyone, they don't care to seek advice from anyone, and they alone are the truth, the "saints" in the business. Because of this mindset, true "entrepreneurs" are very rare in our country's marketplace...

Literature is about humanity; we must eliminate mercantilist thinking!

From our school days, we've heard the great Russian writer M. Gorki say: "Literature is the study of humanity." Does a person who dislikes "reading culture" necessarily possess integrity and courage? Business is also about being a good person (Giản Tư Trung). We can observe how they conduct business, treat their employees, and interact with job applicants to gauge their ethics and "cultural competence."

We often naively believe that "successful and wealthy business people are... entrepreneurs." This is true, but only in certain cases, not most. For example, consider Trinh Van Quyet, Do Anh Dung, Tran Qui Thanh... who have been and are currently facing legal troubles. Do they deserve to be called "entrepreneurs" despite their trillions of dong in assets? "Entrepreneur" is a prestigious title, not a name to be arbitrarily placed before the names of business owners who have harmed the interests of customers and society.

We often teach our children and subordinates to live and work in accordance with the law, and to uphold the humanistic values of "Truth, Goodness, and Beauty" in business culture. Why then do we act contrary to what we have stated? Many business owners have hired tutors to train their employees and support their development. However, they themselves lack a proactive attitude and do not promote a "reading culture"—is this a persistent paradox within businesses?

Reviewing a senior candidate's application is a small and time-saving act. But it demonstrates the respect a company has for the candidate. That respect is a crucial catalyst for the business owner to become an unwavering figure in the minds of job applicants and employees alike.

One might wonder, if enlightened rulers hadn't read "Bình Ngô Sách" (Nguyễn Trãi) or "Ngọa Long Cương Vãn" (Đào Duy Từ), would they have been able to find and recruit talented individuals to jointly establish great empires and leave their names for posterity? Even without the "clear discernment" of their predecessors, they should at least have possessed the virtue of a culturally capable leader...
