Can drinking water before bed prevent stroke?

VTC NewsVTC News15/11/2024

There isn't much clear scientific evidence to prove that drinking water before bed prevents blood thickening, thus reducing and preventing the risk of stroke. However, water is essential for the body, providing minerals, transporting nutrients and oxygen necessary for cells, and nourishing cells in all their activities.

When the human body is dehydrated, the blood becomes more concentrated, the total blood volume in the body decreases, and the risk of stroke increases. If water is not replenished promptly, the body will compensate by diverting blood to the most vital organ, the heart, which can lead to muscle pain.

In fact, strokes are caused by many different factors, including underlying medical conditions, unhealthy lifestyles, age, and family history.

You shouldn't think that simply drinking water before bed can prevent stroke while neglecting health protection, screening, and a healthy lifestyle. Everyone should consume 2-3 liters of water daily, including 150-200 ml 30-60 minutes before bedtime and a glass of warm water after waking up.

The benefits of preventing stroke aren't entirely clear, but staying hydrated can offer many other health advantages. Warm water, in particular, helps blood circulate better, improves mood, and promotes easier and better sleep.

The role of water in the body

When the body is adequately hydrated, all vital functions are ensured. People can then live healthy lives as if they have been given extra energy.

Water protects the spinal cord, tissues, and joints, helps maintain moisture in tissues, and acts as a lubricant for joints. Water also supports the digestive system. Thanks to water, your mouth is always moist. Saliva contains enzymes involved in breaking down food, making it easier to digest when it reaches the stomach.

Drinking enough water ensures your excretory system functions smoothly, eliminating waste through pathways such as sweat, urination, and defecation. Organs like the liver, kidneys, and intestines utilize water to excrete waste. Additionally, water helps prevent constipation.

For pregnant women, water is essential because sufficient hydration reduces the risk of pregnancy-related constipation and ensures adequate milk production for breastfeeding after birth. Water is also effective for improving body shape. Drinking water makes you feel full for longer, especially before meals, which helps limit food intake and prevent weight gain.

Water helps regulate body temperature, promotes metabolism, and thus enhances the absorption of essential nutrients. Water also reduces the rate of kidney stone formation because it increases the volume of urine passing through the kidneys, thereby diluting the mineral salts there and making them less likely to clump together into kidney stones.

Water can strengthen the immune system and reduce the risk of infection. For example, if you have kidney problems, drinking water will help remove toxins that have accumulated in these organs.
