Many people say coconut water is healthy, good for the immune system of both mother and child, so pregnant women who drink a lot of it will have an easier delivery. Is this true? (Suong, 29 years old, Ha Nam ).
Reply:
Coconut water is rich in vitamins A and E, calcium, potassium, and chloride, which help improve health and boost immunity. However, the sugar content in coconut water is relatively high, and continuous and prolonged consumption may lead to excess amniotic fluid, polyhydramnios, and gestational diabetes. Drinking coconut water in moderation during menstruation can help reduce abdominal pain and prevent dehydration.
However, there is no scientific evidence to prove that drinking a lot of coconut water or any other type of water helps make childbirth easier. Nor are there any studies confirming that drinking coconut water daily helps babies have fair skin or clear amniotic fluid, as rumored.
However, pregnant women can apply some tips such as engaging in sexual activity in the third trimester to soften and stretch the perineum during childbirth, helping the delivery go more smoothly. Expectant mothers can also get massages or practice yoga and walking to support the labor process.
Pregnant women should not heed anecdotal methods to induce labor, as this can be dangerous for both mother and baby. When signs of labor appear, pregnant women should quickly go to the hospital for a safe delivery.
