Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate in the US presidential election in November, on August 31 called on her Republican opponent Donald Trump to debate by turning on her microphone during the event.

Ms. Harris and Mr. Trump have both agreed to participate in the debate organized by ABC News on September 10.
On social network X, Ms. Harris sarcastically said: “Mr. Donald Trump is surrendering to his advisers who do not allow him to debate with a live microphone.
If Trump’s own team doesn’t trust him, the American people certainly can’t either… We’re running for President of the United States. Let’s debate openly — with the microphones on.”
Previously, former President Trump expressed his preference for keeping his microphone on and did not like to mute it during the final debate with then-candidate President Joe Biden.
Keeping the microphone on can be both helpful and harmful for political candidates, as it can allow for unintentional comments that are sometimes not intended for the public to see on air. Additionally, turning off the microphone can prevent debaters from interrupting their opponents.
Previously, in a post on social media on August 27, former US President Donald Trump said he had reached an agreement with Ms. Kamala Harris on the rules for their upcoming live debate.
"The rules will be the same as the CNN -moderated debate in June. The rules seem to work for everyone except Joe Biden," Trump wrote.
"The candidates will debate from the podium, without notes or paper. We have also been assured by ABC News that this will be a fair and equal debate, with no questions provided to either side in advance," he said.
Mr. Trump and Ms. Harris will debate for the first time on September 10 in Philadelphia, coordinated by ABC News.
Previously, Mr. Trump proposed to move the debate to September 4 and asked Fox News to moderate it, but was refused by Ms. Harris.
