According to multiple reports, Microsoft has begun blocking Windows 11 updates on systems with the StartAllBack app installed. When they try to download the latest preview version, they receive an error message saying the app poses a potential performance or security risk.
StartAllBack is an application that helps customize the Windows 11 Start menu.

The warning reads: “This application cannot run because it has security or performance issues on Windows. A new version might be available. Check with your software vendor to see if an updated version works with this version of Windows.”
While the block doesn't prevent StartAllBack from working on current versions of Windows 11, it does affect your ability to get the latest updates to the operating system. However, there appears to be a workaround, at least for now. Some users have found that uninstalling StartAllBack, updating Windows 11, and then reinstalling the app with a renamed executable file works around Microsoft's restriction.
The app's developer has acknowledged the issue, confirming that a simple renaming trick would have allowed StartAllBack to slip under Microsoft's radar. However, they have also warned that future Windows updates could potentially break the workaround after the trick was revealed.
Microsoft's blocking of StartAllBack has drawn criticism from a section of the Windows community. While the company may cite security and compatibility reasons for restricting certain applications during updates, many see this as a case of Microsoft's 'hostile' attitude towards programs that modify or replace central elements of the Windows user interface.
