Ukraine claims to have produced its first 100 domestically produced missiles, while it is estimated that Russia produces 30% more artillery shells than all the European Union countries combined.

President Zelensky said Ukraine was actively developing its missile program.

The Kyiv Independent news site on November 10 quoted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as saying that the country had produced the first 100 missiles, after actively developing the missile program since Russia launched its military campaign in February 2022.

The information was given by the leader in a speech on the evening of November 9, when he praised the domestic production of weapons, but said he would not provide "any further details" about this type of missile.

“This year, we have achieved significant results in many areas. There are our artillery, ammunition and guns. There are unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) of various types and for various tasks, which not only support the battlefield in defending positions and destroying the enemy, but also strike deeper and deeper into Russia. We will continue to build on this,” he said.

Homegrown long-range weapons are of key importance to Ukraine's defense strategy, as Western partners have refused to allow deep strikes into Russia with foreign-made missiles.

In July, President Zelensky said the country's missile program had "good momentum." A month later, he announced that Ukraine had successfully tested its first domestically produced ballistic missile.

Ukraine has been developing the Hrim-2 ballistic missile for years. While nothing has been confirmed, there has been speculation that this is the ballistic missile that Zelensky said he successfully tested.

Earlier, the leader also revealed that Ukraine has developed another domestic weapon, the Palianytsia missile-carrying UAV.

Russia produces more artillery shells than the EU?

At a press conference in Kyiv on November 9, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said that Russia will be able to produce 30% more artillery shells than the total number of artillery shells produced by all members of the European Union (EU).

"According to Ukrainian intelligence, based on the information we have, without a proper response or prevention, Russia will be able to produce 30% more artillery shells than all EU countries combined," Ukrinform quoted him as saying.

Mr Sybiha called for international action to limit Russia's industrial capacity.

Ammunition shortages have long been a cause for concern in Ukraine but have escalated this year. The EU has failed to deliver a promise to deliver 1 million artillery shells between March 2023 and 2024, while disputes in Washington have led to delays in a $61 billion aid package.

Several countries have backed a Czech-led initiative to buy 800,000 artillery shells for Ukraine, proposed in February. In March, the EU allocated €500 million to boost EU ammunition production capacity to 2 million shells annually by the end of 2025.

Ukraine has long been trying to increase its own ammunition production to reduce its dependence on Western partners. Last year, Ukraine’s Ukroboronprom said it had mastered the production of 82mm, 122mm, 125mm and 152mm ammunition.

Risk of escalating war

According to Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Army Oleksandr Syrskyi, the situation on the front line is "challenging and tends towards escalation".

"The enemy, taking advantage of the numerical advantage, continued offensive operations, focusing its efforts mainly on the Pokrovsk and Kurakhove directions," he wrote on Facebook on November 9.

He said he shared the above assessment with General Christopher Cavoli, NATO's top commander in Europe, in a phone call the same day.

According to an analysis by Bloomberg published on November 1, Ukraine has lost 1,146 square kilometers of territory since launching an offensive into Russia's Kursk province in early August, with the week ending November 1 being the worst week in terms of lost territory since the beginning of this year.
