(CLO) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that negotiations to end the conflict will begin with US President-elect Donald Trump after he takes office.
Mr. Zelenskyy also emphasized that only when Mr. Trump provides strong security guarantees to Ukraine can a dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin take place.
Speaking in an interview with Lex Fridman, President Zelenskyy said he expected to meet Mr Trump possibly on January 25, which coincides with his birthday.

Mr Zelenskyy stressed Europe's involvement in the process. He said European leaders have always been interested in his relationship with the US President-elect, and affirmed the importance of Europe having a voice in any solution.
However, Mr Zelenskyy also warned that Mr Trump could face a political challenge if he only achieved a ceasefire without providing relevant security guarantees to Ukraine.
Mr Zelenskyy also dismissed expectations that President Putin would want to end the conflict, stressing that pressure was needed to force the Russian leader to do so. "Don't wait for Putin to want to stop the war. Put pressure on him to do so," he concluded.
During the election campaign, Mr. Trump repeatedly declared that he had a good relationship with Mr. Putin and promised to end the Ukraine crisis within 24 hours if elected, which is raising many international debates about the role of the US in this conflict.
