*Thailand arrests many illegal foreign workers: The Thai Ministry of Labor recently announced that more than 100,000 Myanmar workers were arrested in a 120-day crackdown on illegal labor.

According to the Thai Ministry of Labor, a total of 147,726 undocumented migrant workers have been arrested. Of those arrested, 110,130 were from Myanmar, 22,999 were from Cambodia, 9,675 were from Laos and about 5,000 were from other countries.

Workers found violating permit regulations face fines of $140-$1,400, deportation, and a two-year suspension of work permits. Employers, meanwhile, face fines of $280-$2,800 for each worker caught without a valid permit. (Bangkok Post)

*Philippines, Japan conduct first joint exercises in the East Sea: The Philippine military announced on August 2 that the Philippine Navy and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force conducted their first joint exercises in the East Sea.

“This exercise is part of ongoing efforts to enhance regional and international cooperation towards the realization of a free and open Indo- Pacific region,” the Philippine armed forces said in a statement. (Reuters)

*Germany joins United Nations Command in Korea: German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced on August 2 that the country has officially joined the US-led United Nations Command (UNC) in Korea.

Accordingly, Germany will join the group of countries that monitor the border with North Korea and pledge to help protect South Korea in case of war. Germany is the 18th country to join the UNC.

Speaking at a ceremony at the main US military headquarters in Pyeongtaek, south of Seoul, Pistorius said the move was a “clear sign” of Berlin’s commitment to peace and security in the Indo-Pacific region.
