Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on January 12 that Kyiv is ready to return North Korean soldiers being held in the country if leader Kim Jong-un can facilitate the exchange of Ukrainian soldiers detained in Russia.
"In addition to the first soldiers from North Korea who were captured, there will certainly be more. It is only a matter of time before our soldiers capture other soldiers," Mr. Zelensky shared on the X platform.

The Ukrainian leader added that for those North Korean soldiers who do not want to return, the country will give them other options. North Korea and Russia have not commented on the new information. Earlier, the Ukrainian leader said for the first time that his country had captured two North Korean soldiers in the Kursk region (Russia). Ukraine and the West have accused about 11,000 North Korean soldiers deployed in the Kursk region to support Russian forces against Ukraine.

In another development, US President-elect Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are expected to have a phone call in the coming days or weeks, according to Reuters. "Preparations are underway. We have not yet established the exact framework for this meeting," said Mike Waltz, who was chosen by President-elect Trump as national security adviser. Regarding the Russia-Ukraine war situation, Mr. Waltz expressed his wish that Moscow and Kyiv establish a ceasefire "at any time", saying that this is an extremely positive first step for both sides and will help promote negotiations for a peaceful solution.
