The Ukrainian military announced on October 16 that the Artan, Kraken and International Corps special operations units of the Defense Intelligence Unit of Ukraine (DIU) conducted a successful operation to retake from Russia a forest located north of the village of Lyptsi, Kharkov province.

Accordingly, DIU said that Ukraine had regained 400 hectares of territory, causing Russia to lose nearly a regiment on this front.

The attack took place north of the village of Lyptsi, 10km from the Russian border. Russia controlled the area from February to September 2022. Russia then continued to attack this area this year.

"As a result of the joint operations, Ukraine regained the Russian defense zone, eliminated three motorized rifle battalions, an assault unit and a reconnaissance company of the 7th Separate Motorized Rifle Regiment of the 11th Army of the Russian Armed Forces," the statement said.

In addition, Ukraine announced that it had captured a number of Russian soldiers to be able to conduct a prisoner exchange in the near future.

"After losing 400 hectares of forest north of Lyptsi, the situation for Russia in this sector of the front is deteriorating and almost hopeless. The successful offensive gives Ukraine the momentum to continue pushing Russia back north of Kharkov," DIU said.

Russia has not commented on the claims from Ukraine.

In early May, Russia suddenly attacked Kharkov again after nearly 2 years of being pushed back from here.

President Putin explained that Russia's attacks on the Kharkiv region were aimed at creating a "buffer zone" on the Ukrainian border. The Russian leader said that he had previously warned that Moscow would create a buffer zone on the border with Ukraine if attacks on Russian territory continued.

President Putin said that a buffer zone would have to be large enough to prevent foreign-made weapons from attacking Russian territory.
