Russia is using large numbers of guided bombs to target Ukrainian positions, spokesman for the Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Yury Ignat, said.
According to this official, the Russian military is capable of launching up to 100 guided bombs per day.
He explained that air-guided bombs are particularly dangerous because they can fly up to 70km from the launch point to the target. He said that Russia initially tested these weapons in the Kherson region and caused significant damage to the Beryslavsky district.
He stressed the seriousness of guided bombs for Ukraine, saying the only effective way to deal with these weapons is to destroy aircraft capable of carrying bombs, including the Su-35 and Su-34.
These planes can drop bombs from Russian-controlled areas, over the sea, or even from Russian territory.
"To counter these aircraft, we need long-range air defense missile systems such as Patriot or F-16 fighters equipped with missiles capable of reaching Russian Sukhoi aircraft. At the very least, Ukraine needs to prevent aircraft from approaching our borders to repel them," he explained.
Russia takes advantage of a large number of bombs left over from the Soviet era in its warehouses and attaches a special device to turn them into smart bombs capable of gliding into targets with relative precision.
According to Forbes , the guidance mechanism of this bomb is not absolutely correct, however this is not too necessary when the Russian bombs carry 907kg of explosives inside, creating the ability to destroy on a large scale.
The advantage of smart bombs is that they can hover from a long distance and accurately attack the target. This allows Russian planes to drop bombs from a distance without having to enter disputed airspace, avoiding the risk of being shot down by Ukrainian air defense.
In September, a Ukrainian soldier admitted that Russian smart bombs were increasingly causing concern in Ukraine and were considered “one of the biggest fears”.
“Guided bombs are one of the biggest fears. Russia uses them extensively. I won’t comment on the accuracy of these weapons, but they are very powerful,” Ukrainian soldier Olexandr Solon’ko told Forbes .
In addition, Russia has in recent months used a new tactic, combining large numbers of swarm-style attack UAVs with FAB and UPAB smart bombs using satellite navigation systems.
Russia is using overwhelming numbers to "swarm" UAVs through Ukraine's air defense system. Kiev may be able to shoot down some of the UAVs, but not all of them. There will still be UAVs or smart bombs that will penetrate and hunt Ukrainian targets on the ground.
The price of smart bombs is very cheap compared to the millions of dollars of a missile. Therefore, Russia can attack in large numbers with guided bombs, posing a big challenge for Ukraine, especially in the upcoming cold winter.
