Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed the country's air force commander, Mykola Oleshchuk, shortly after the Ukrainian military announced that an F-16 fighter jet had crashed during combat, killing the pilot.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian General Staff announced that Lieutenant General Anatoliy Kryvonozhka will temporarily take command of the country's air force.
President Zelensky did not specify the reason for this decision; however, the move came just one day after the Ukrainian military announced that an F-16 fighter jet had crashed during combat, killing the pilot. Significantly, multiple sources from both Ukraine and Russia claimed that this first instance of an F-16 fighter jet being shot down on Ukrainian territory was due to friendly fire from Ukrainian air defenses.
In another development, the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reported that Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani declared on the sidelines of the European Union's Foreign Affairs Council that Ukraine is not permitted to use weapons supplied by Rome to attack Russian territory; emphasizing that Italy maintains its position on weapons supplied to Ukraine and that Rome "is not at war with Russia".
On August 29, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba stated that Kyiv hopes to reach a consensus with its partners on the use of long-range missiles against targets in Russia. Being allowed to attack targets in Russia would create strategic instability for Moscow. Meanwhile, the presence of F-16s in Ukraine, especially if authorized to shoot down airborne targets over Russian airspace, would significantly enhance its air defense capabilities.
