(Dan Tri) - For the first time in history, the Euro tournament could see up to 6 players receive the Golden Boot award.
UEFA confirmed to change the criteria for the Euro 2024 Golden Boot award. Accordingly, they will remove all secondary criteria such as assists or minutes played in this award. Previously, in the case of two players having the same number of goals, the first criterion considered in the Golden Boot award was the number of assists. For example, at Euro 2020, two players C. Ronaldo and Patrick Schick both had 5 goals. However, the Portuguese superstar was awarded the Golden Boot award when he had 1 assist. Patrick Schick did not have any assists. If two players have the same number of goals and the same number of assists, the criterion considered is the number of minutes played. This case appeared at Euro 2012 when Fernando Torres and Mario Gomez both had 3 goals and 1 assist. However, Torres received the award after only playing 189 minutes, while Gomez played 282 minutes. The 6 players with 3 goals are Dani Olmo (Spain), Harry Kane (England), Georges Mikautadze (Georgia), Cody Gakpo (Netherlands), Ivan Schranz (Slovakia) and Jamal Musiala (Germany). Of these, only Harry Kane and Dani Olmo have a chance to improve their achievements. If according to the old rules, Dani Olmo has a bigger advantage than Harry Kane when the Spanish player has 2 assists while Kane has no assists. Besides these players, two other factors that can create surprises in the race for the top scorer are Fabian Ruiz and Jude Bellingham when they both have 2 goals. It is not impossible that the number of players winning the Euro 2024 top scorer will increase. The Euro 2024 final between Spain and England takes place at 02:00 on July 15.
