On the afternoon of April 27, U.22 Vietnam entered the second training session in Cambodia, on the natural grass field in the sports complex of the National Institute of Physical Education and Sports (NIPES) with a relatively high-quality field. Coach Philippe Troussier's students no longer practiced passing the ball and purely moving. Instead, the French coach divided the team into opposing teams, focusing on improving the players' teamwork and finishing.
U.22 Vietnam only scored 2 goals in 5 friendly matches before the tournament, in which the deadlocked match against Ba Ria - Vung Tau Club (lost 0-1) showed the limitations in the team's ability to score. Although they still held the ball well in their own half and circulated the ball quite diversely, Coach Troussier's strikers were confused when they had the ball in the penalty area, hesitated between passing and shooting, or did not shoot well.
Of the 5 strikers that Coach Troussier has, including Van Truong, Quoc Viet, Thanh Nhan, Vi Hao and Van Tung, 4 names were promoted from the U.20 team. The common point of this group of players is that they play aggressively, enthusiastically, and devotedly, but are immature in making decisive moves. The ability to coordinate passing and movement of the attacking players is also a big problem for U.22 Vietnam.
Therefore, Coach Troussier spent time for the players to compete against each other, aiming to improve ball handling skills in specific attacking situations such as wing play, midfield play, coordination in the penalty area, and escaping the ball when the opponent surrounded them. If in the first foundation-building training sessions, the French coach wanted his students to coordinate well in groups, prioritizing ball rotation exercises at close range, then the most recent training sessions of U.22 Vietnam required simplicity but decisiveness from the players.
In the hot weather in Cambodia, U.22 Vietnam is trying very hard to meet the requirements of the coaching staff. It is expected that Coach Troussier will finalize the list of 20 players for the 32nd SEA Games before the technical meeting on April 29. Therefore, the players only have 2 training sessions left to "score points" with the 68-year-old coach, thereby remaining on the official competition list.
