DNVN - On October 10, billionaire Elon Musk officially introduced an electric robot taxi with fully autonomous driving capabilities. Mr. Musk left open the possibility that this model will be launched in 2027, nearly a decade after he first promised a self-driving car.
According to information revealed by Elon Musk, the car will not have a steering wheel, accelerator, or brake pedal, and will be equipped with a wireless charging system based on induction technology. He described the car as a mobile bar, where passengers can just sit back, relax, and do whatever they want until the car takes them to their destination. In particular, Musk emphasized that the safety of self-driving cars is 10 to 20 times higher than that of human-driven cars, with a price not exceeding $30,000.
Elon Musk also said Tesla plans to operate “fully autonomous, unattended” vehicles in Texas and California next year, using existing vehicles. After that, Tesla will move to produce the “cybercab” robot taxis he mentioned.
Also at the event, Musk unveiled a passenger vehicle called the “Robovan.” The vehicle, which looks like a giant moving toaster, has no steering wheel, accelerator, brake pedal, or driver. It can hold up to 20 people and can easily be converted to carry cargo.
In 2016, Elon Musk first mentioned the idea of developing a fully autonomous car in 2018. A year later, he advertised a car so smart that users could sleep while it drove them. However, in reality, self-driving cars still have many safety issues.
