USD exchange rate in the world last week
The dollar rose 0.14% to 104.18 on Monday amid concerns over U.S. tariffs. The safe-haven Japanese yen rose early in the session before retreating, while gold hit a new high as investors shunned risky assets as tariffs overshadowed the outlook for U.S. inflation and economic growth.
The greenback edged up 0.01% to 104.20 on April 2 after U.S. economic data showed weakness in the manufacturing sector and the labor market ahead of the Trump administration's tariff announcement. U.S. manufacturing contracted in March after two straight months of expansion amid growing concerns that tariffs would raise prices for consumers and businesses. A separate report from the U.S. Labor Department also showed that employment fell to 7.568 million in February.
However, on April 3, the DXY index fell sharply by 0.57% to 103.69 after President Trump began announcing new tariffs. Accordingly, the US will apply a basic tax rate of 10% on all imports into the US, along with higher tariffs on some of its largest trading partners. That means all countries and territories will be subject to this common 10% import tax. At the event, the US President also brought a board showing the tax rates applied to each economy, with tax rates ranging from 10% to 49%. Of which, the UK, Brazil, and Singapore will be subject to a 10% tax. The European Union, Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and India will be subject to 20-26%. China and Vietnam are among the countries subject to the highest tax rates, at 34% and 46%, respectively.
The dollar fell 1.87% to 101.94 on April 4 as investors grappled with the impact of President Trump’s tariffs on global trade and economic growth. The announcement of “harsher” tariffs than expected sent shockwaves through markets, sending global stocks into the red and forcing investors to move into less risky currencies, bonds and gold, amid fears that a sharp global economic slowdown would spur inflation.
Still, the greenback ended the week up 0.82% at 102.89 as Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell acknowledged the impact of US tariffs and signaled caution on future monetary easing. Specifically, Mr. Powell said tariffs increase the risk of higher inflation and slower growth, highlighting the difficulties ahead for policymakers at the US central bank. Mr. Powell's comments came after data earlier in the day showed that non- farm payrolls increased by 228,000 jobs last month, after increasing by 117,000 jobs in February, much higher than the forecast of 135,000. The unemployment rate rose to 4.2% from 4.1%.
