According to Reuters, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent believes that US-China trade tensions will de-escalate, but negotiations with Beijing have not yet begun and will be a "long battle".

“While it is still early days, the mood is clearly changing and what was a strong wave of ‘US sell-off’ that swept through markets yesterday has partially reversed,” said Chris Weston, head of research at brokerage Pepperstone. “The market is getting used to the president saying things on a whim and then reversing his stance as if it was never a big deal.”

The dollar rose as much as 1.1% against the Japanese yen, a key safe haven for anyone dumping US assets, before paring gains and recording a 0.2% gain to 141.98, just above a seven-month low below 140.

The euro fell 0.2% to $1.139, while the pound fell 0.2% to $1.331.

Longer-term Treasury yields rose as Trump's reversal on Powell appeared to lessen the threat to US monetary and fiscal credibility.

Investors have worried that pressure from the White House to cut interest rates risks fueling inflation just as Trump's tariffs are raising prices.

Still, the big picture hasn’t changed enough to make investors start flocking back to US assets, according to Jefferies strategist Mohit Kumar. “Volatility is likely to persist, and we would use any sell-off to add to our positions in Europe and Asia. In these markets, it makes sense to stay humble and flexible, focus on the long-term view and trade these headlines,” he said.

The yield on the 30-year bond fell 14 basis points to 4.74%, while the yield on the 2-year note rose 3 basis points to 3.82%, as investors discounted the possibility of an immediate rate cut.
