The dollar is particularly fragile amid market concerns about the US administration’s tariffs, analysts said, Reuters reported. Doubts about the independence of the Fed threaten the dollar’s ​​value as a reserve currency, with analysts warning of a potential pullback from what many see as overinvestment in US assets.

The US currency accelerated its decline after Thailand's prime minister said trade talks with Washington - scheduled to start on Wednesday - would be postponed.

President Trump on Monday stepped up his criticism of Fed Chairman Jerome Powell, calling him a "big loser" and demanding he lower interest rates "NOW" or risk a recession.

“The firing of Jerome Powell would be disastrous for the dollar and confidence in US equity markets in general,” said Adam Button, chief currency analyst at ForexLive.

“The market is hoping that sanity will prevail and the US economy will be allowed to continue to grow,” White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett said Friday. The president and his team are continuing to study whether they could fire Powell, who last week said the central bank could be patient in assessing how to set policy.

Money markets have priced in a less than 10% chance of a Fed rate cut in May and a 90 basis point chance by year-end, roughly in line with last week's levels. IRPR

“The worst-case scenario for the greenback right now is that Powell caves in and does an emergency rate cut, although that remains a low-probability event,” said Francesco Pesole, strategist at ING.

The dollar fell 0.03% to 140.820 yen, after earlier falling below the psychological 140 level for the first time since mid-September.

The greenback rose 0.57% to 0.8138 Swiss franc, not far from a decade-low of 0.8042 hit in the previous session.

The euro fell 0.38% to $1.1467, after rising to $1.1573 on Monday for the first time since November 2021.
