Exchange rate developments in the domestic market

In the domestic market, according to the World and Vietnam Newspaper at 8:00 a.m. on April 23, the State Bank announced the central exchange rate of the Vietnamese Dong to the USD at 23,907 VND.

The reference USD exchange rate at the State Bank of Vietnam is listed at: 23,684 VND - 26,070 VND.

USD exchange rates at commercial banks are as follows:

Vietcombank: 25,725 - 26,115 VND.

Vietinbank: 25,763 - 26,120 VND.

World market developments

The US Dollar Index (DXY) measuring the greenback's fluctuations against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF) increased by 1.36% to 99.64.

The US dollar rose after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he believed trade tensions between the US and China would ease.

In a closed-door presentation to investors at a JP Morgan conference, Mr Bessent also described future negotiations with the US as a “war” that has not yet begun.

Investor confidence has been shaken by US President Donald Trump's tariff policies, which investors fear could disrupt world trade and hurt the economy.

On April 22, the International Monetary Fund cut its growth forecasts for the United States, China and most countries, citing the impact of US tariffs, which are now at their highest level in 100 years.

Investors also continued to assess Trump’s criticism of Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell. This week, Trump criticized Powell for not cutting interest rates, raising concerns about the stability of the US economy.

The US dollar regained momentum, after falling to 97.923 in the previous session, its lowest level since March 2022.

The dollar rose 0.42% to 141.470 yen, after earlier falling below the psychological level of 140 for the first time since mid-September.

Concerns that President Donald Trump's trade policies could lead to a US economic recession have created some demand for US government bonds.

The benchmark 10-year yield is currently at 4.391%, down from earlier in the week.
