The US Dollar Index (DXY) measures the greenback's fluctuations against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF), recording at 103.93 points.
The yen has been hovering around 150 JPY/USD this week, making markets wary of potential intervention by the Japanese government in the currency market. The 150 JPY/USD exchange rate previously prompted Japan to take action to save the yen from a slide in 2022.
Japan's economy unexpectedly fell into recession in the final quarter of last year due to sluggish consumer prices, which could prompt the Bank of Japan (BOJ) to keep its easy monetary policy unchanged.
Although there was a cooling session during the week, by the end of the week, the Yen exchange rate increased again and closed the week at 150.45 JPY/USD - approaching the 3-month peak of 150.88 JPY/USD (recorded on February 13).
The yen is the worst-performing G10 currency this year, with the yen up 6.7% against the dollar year-to-date.
The week also saw the US dollar snap a five-week winning streak. Expectations for a rate cut by the Fed are now expected to come in June. Federal Reserve officials expect three 25 basis point cuts this year, while the market has speculated as many as seven rate cuts in 2024. The US dollar index fell 0.34% for the week.
