According to a source from ASEAN Football, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) is negotiating with the Football Federation of Australia (FAA) to organize a friendly match next September.
Vietnam lost both matches against Australia in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
However, whether the match will take place as scheduled or not will depend on the results of the second qualifying round draw for the 2026 World Cup.
If the two teams do not meet in the Asian qualifiers, the match will be played and vice versa.
In the friendly matches taking place in June 2023, the Vietnamese team played quite impressively, winning two matches against Hong Kong (China) and Syria.
Notably, the 1-0 victory over the highly rated opponent Syria helped the "Golden Star Warriors" extend their unbeaten streak in friendly matches to 22.
As for Australia, during the recent FIFA Days they lost 0-2 to Argentina, the team that had sweated before them in the round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup.
According to ASEAN Football, the Vietnamese team is actively preparing for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and the 2023 Asian Cup.
Therefore, the match with a strong opponent like Australia will be a good test for coach Troussier's team.
In the past, the red team had twice faced the Australian team in the third qualifying round of the 2022 World Cup in Asia.
In both of those matches, the Vietnamese team lost to the "Kangaroos" with scores of 0-4 and 0-1 respectively.
Besides Australia, coach Troussier and his team will also have a friendly match with Palestine in September 2023.
This is considered an opponent of equal strength for Quang Hai and his teammates as they are ranked 93rd in the world (likely to drop to 96th in the next update).
