Admission to grade 10 high school for the 2025-2026 school year: Pressure from educational institutions

According to the assessment of educational institutions, organizing the 10th grade entrance exam is a reasonable policy of the education sector. Because, in the past, students' psychology was often somewhat subjective, many students did not focus on studying because they only needed to rely on their academic records to qualify for grade 10.

Therefore, the entrance exam method in all public high schools is expected to overcome the situation of students' neglectful learning, as well as increase the responsibility of schools and teachers in ensuring the quality of teaching according to the 2018 General Education Program.

However, the "break" after more than 10 years of not organizing entrance exams also causes difficulties and pressure for localities and schools.

M'Drắk district currently has 14 secondary schools with 5,578 students, of which the proportion of ethnic minority students accounts for more than 70%, many schools have over 90% of ethnic minority students. Meanwhile, the school facilities are not uniform; there is still a local surplus or shortage of teachers, so organizing review sessions for grade 9 students faces difficulties from funding to teaching staff, students' psychology and learning spirit; and the attention and cooperation of parents.

At the school level, Mr. Tran Quoc Vuong, Principal of Ho Tung Mau Secondary School (Buon Don District) said that, following the guidance of the education sector, the school has focused on communication work on enrollment and career guidance for students; at the same time, organizing free tutoring for grade 9 students from March to the end of May 2025, but 40/192 grade 9 students of the school did not register for the class. The absence of 20% of students in the tutoring class made the school passive in implementing the main teaching plan as well as reviewing for grade 9 students.

The representative of the Department of Education and Training of Krong Ana district said that according to Circular 29 on extra teaching and learning, each subject is organized with a maximum of 2 extra periods/week (equivalent to about 16 periods/month); that number of periods is not enough to consolidate and improve the quality of the upcoming exam because education is a process. In the long term, if extra tutoring is organized throughout the school year, it will cause inequality between subjects because most teachers of exam subjects (Math, Literature, English) have extra periods; when teaching extra tutoring, teachers have to shoulder additional responsibilities...

To prepare carefully for the upcoming exam, the Department of Education and Training of M'Drắk district has developed a plan to organize the end-of-year exam for grade 9 students in the whole district according to the common exam questions developed by the Department; in which, the exam questions are built in 100% essay format so that students can get used to the essay writing method. The Department also requires educational institutions to focus on educating students on self-study skills; coordinate with parents in monitoring and urging students to study at home...

In fact, organizing admission to grade 10 high school by means of an entrance exam will ensure the goal of improving the effectiveness of education streaming after graduating from junior high school; gradually improving the quality of mass education... However, changing the "habit" after more than 10 years also requires careful preparation to avoid causing pressure but still ensure the dual goal of the exam; attracting the attention of parents in the process of educating students; "reviving" the spirit of learning for students...

Director of the Department of Education and Training Le Thi Thanh Xuan said that schools must "fulfill their role" in teaching and reviewing for students: organizing full teaching of the main curriculum; continuing to innovate and diversify teaching methods and forms, increasing the application of information technology... to support students in self-study, teachers to teach to their full responsibilities; organizing review for the right subjects according to the spirit of Circular 29 (final year students, unqualified students, excellent students). Assigning teachers to ensure the prescribed teaching hour quota, prioritizing appropriate assignments for final year teachers to have maximum time to support final year students.

Organizing mock exams is one of the effective assessment channels to have a basis for organizing revision for students, but we must avoid the case of students taking the exam just for the sake of it. Because the mock exam process will help students get familiar with the exam method, exam room environment, exam structure, exam taking method... Organizing mock exams must be carried out according to the actual conditions at the school and locality, avoiding putting pressure on teachers (in setting questions, grading exams, invigilating exams) and students (reviewing for exams, taking exams)...

According to the Department of Education and Training, the total number of 9th grade students in the first semester of the 2024-2025 school year is 27,203 students. The academic ranking results show that 2,993 students are classified as Good (accounting for 8.98%), 8,061 students are classified as Fair (24.19%), 12,275 students are classified as Achieved (36.83%), and 3,874 students are classified as Not Achieved (11.62%).
