Priority admission is one of three groups of subjects under the direct admission method in 2025 of Ho Chi Minh City National University.
In particular, with the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training on converting scores to be considered together with high school graduation exam scores, then considering from top to bottom, this year schools no longer have separate quotas for each admission method.
Priority given to excellent students from 149 high schools nationwide
This year, member schools of Ho Chi Minh City National University simultaneously use many admission methods, including the priority admission method according to the university's own regulations.
Speaking to Tuoi Tre, Dr. Duong Ton Thai Duong - Deputy Head of Training Department of Ho Chi Minh City National University - said: "For the direct admission method, there will be 3 subjects: direct admission according to regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, direct admission of the best students of high schools according to regulations of Ho Chi Minh City National University; priority admission for excellent students of 149 schools in the direction of integrating many criteria (foreign language certificates, other activities) with high school learning results".
According to Mr. Duong, the list of 149 high schools nationwide with students given priority for admission to Ho Chi Minh City National University this year remains stable as in 2024, including 83 specialized and gifted high schools (8 schools affiliated with universities and 17 schools affiliated with provinces/cities) and 66 other high schools selected according to the criteria of Ho Chi Minh City National University.
How do schools prioritize admission?
In previous years, priority admission was one of the early admission methods. However, the university admission regulations in 2025 have changed a lot, especially the early admission is no longer available, so schools must also adjust their priority admission regulations.
According to Master Cu Xuan Tien - Head of Admissions and Student Affairs Department of University of Economics and Law (Ho Chi Minh City National University), this year the school still considers direct admission and gives priority to direct admission of excellent and talented students.
"Specifically, for priority admission, the school will consider a combination of 3 subjects in the admission combination, which is the transcript scores of 6 semesters of high school of candidates who are excellent students from 149 schools according to regulations. This year, the school has 6 subject combinations for admission applicable to all majors/specializations: math - physics - chemistry, math - English - literature, math - English - physics, math - English - chemistry, math - English - information technology, math - English - economic and legal education.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Luu Thuy Ngan - Vice Principal of the University of Information Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University) - said that the school prioritizes admission of candidates from the list of 149 high schools that prioritize admission to Ho Chi Minh City National University (from 2026, priority will only be given to specialized/talented students); candidates who have won high prizes in prestigious exams (Informatics Olympiad, Road to Olympia, ICPC, SEA Games, ASIAD...); candidates with prestigious international certificates (SAT, ACT, A level, IB) with satisfactory results.
"The admission score is the average score of 3 years of high school for 3 subjects in the admission combination, plus the priority points (for candidates in the provincial/municipal team participating in the national excellent student exam for subjects included in the school's admission combination). The school considers the combination, candidates do not need to register for the combination, the school will choose the combination of candidates with the highest score", Ms. Ngan added.

This year, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Ho Chi Minh City National University) continues to prioritize admission of many candidates: priority for direct admission of the best candidates from high schools in 2025 (according to regulations of Ho Chi Minh City National University); priority for admission of excellent students from 149 high schools; priority for admission of students who are members of provincial and municipal teams participating in national excellent student competitions or winning first, second, or third prizes in provincial/municipal excellent student competitions; candidates who graduated from foreign high school programs; priority for admission based on high school academic results for candidates with excellent achievements, especially outstanding in social activities, arts, sports, etc.
Dr. Pham Tan Ha, vice principal of the school, said: "For candidates, the chance of admission does not decrease. The important thing is that candidates need to determine their favorite major, review carefully to get the best exam results; at the same time, carefully research the admission information of the schools and register for admission according to the correct procedure to increase the chance of admission to their favorite major and school."
How to register for priority admission?
According to MSc. Phung Quan - admissions consultant of the University of Natural Sciences (Ho Chi Minh City National University), regarding the admissions method, for separate exams, candidates still have to register for the exam according to the regulations of the exam organizing units to get the results of the admission registration.
For priority admission (with admission based on combined transcripts), schools must use the results of the entire 12th grade year for high school transcripts (in previous years, many schools only considered 5 semesters at high school level, not counting the second semester score of 12th grade).
"All candidates this year must register for admission online on the ministry's common system. Before registering for admission, candidates need to carefully study the admission plans of the schools to choose a major, choose a school, clearly know the subject combinations for admission, and from there register appropriate wishes, helping to increase the chance of admission.
The admission process is done at the same time, the system can process all the candidate's data to select the best candidates for admission," Mr. Quan advised.
Selection criteria
The criteria for selecting high schools with students given priority for admission to Ho Chi Minh City National University include: allocating the number of schools according to the priority of admission areas or provinces/cities with a large number of candidates registering and being admitted to Ho Chi Minh City National University in recent years; high schools with a large number of candidates being admitted and enrolled in Ho Chi Minh City National University; high schools with a number of alumni achieving high academic results when studying at Ho Chi Minh City National University.
