TPO - It is expected that by the end of the third quarter of this year, the Can Gio (HCMC) - Vam Lang (Tien Giang) sea ferry will be put into operation.
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport has just reported on a proposal to exploit a fixed-route passenger and cargo transport route by sea ferry from Can Gio district (Ho Chi Minh City) to Vam Lang (Go Cong Dong district, Tien Giang province) and vice versa (Can Gio - Vam Lang ferry).
According to the proposed plan, the terminal for exploitation on the Ho Chi Minh City side is located at the existing Long Hoa wharf area (Long Hoa commune, Can Gio district). The other terminal is located in Vam Lang town (Go Cong Dong district, Tien Giang province). This sea ferry route will be about 12km long, with a travel time of 30 minutes (one way).
Ferry operation time is from 6am to 6pm daily and in wind conditions not exceeding level 6, with good visibility. The ferry operates a minimum of 4 trips/day, including 4 outbound and 4 return trips. Depending on the actual number of passengers, the investor can increase the number of trips to meet the travel needs of the people.

In terms of scale, the ferry route has at least 2 vehicles, and must ensure the criteria of total weight not less than 100 tons, passenger capacity not less than 100 passengers, motorbikes not less than 50 vehicles, cars/trucks not less than 10 cars from 4 to 29 seats.
It is expected that after the plan to call for investment and exploit the ferry route is agreed upon and approved in principle by the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City and Tien Giang Province, the Department of Transport of Ho Chi Minh City will take the lead in advising on the establishment of a working group to develop criteria and select qualified and capable exploitation enterprises.
Regarding financial capacity, the investing enterprise must demonstrate its equity and expected minimum loan capital of about 120 billion VND to invest in two terminals; water vehicles, waiting rooms, parking lots, etc. At the same time, the investor must also demonstrate its experience and capacity in this field.
According to the proposed plan, the selection of investors is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2024. After that, the enterprise will complete the investment within 6 months. By the end of the third quarter of 2024, the ferry will be put into operation.
The ferry route's operating period is 15 years from the date of announcement of operations at both terminals.
In order to have a basis to submit to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee for consideration and approval of the plan, the policy of developing Criteria and establishing a Working Group for selecting exploitation enterprises, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport has just sent a document requesting the Tien Giang Department of Transport to coordinate with relevant departments and branches to study and contribute opinions to complete the Report proposing the above plan. From there, a document will be sent to the City Department of Transport before February 24 to synthesize, complete and report to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee.
According to the Department of Transport of Ho Chi Minh City, regarding inter-provincial connections, Can Gio district has connecting ferry routes such as Can Gio - Can Giuoc ferry (Long An province), operating since August 2018; passenger - cargo transport route by sea ferry on a fixed route from Can Gio district (Ho Chi Minh City) to Vung Tau city (Ba Ria - Vung Tau province), operating since December 2020; in addition, there is Binh Khanh ferry terminal connecting the center of Ho Chi Minh City with Can Gio district. These ferry routes are invested synchronously and completely in terms of infrastructure, modern vehicles with large capacity, transporting cars and motorbikes, ensuring safety of waterway traffic, aesthetics and environment.
However, the waterway connection from Ho Chi Minh City to Tien Giang province has not been invested in and developed like the above routes. The means of transport are still primitive (wooden shell material), low capacity, only serving the transport of people, hand-carried goods and a small number of motorbikes (not allowed to carry cars). Therefore, it is necessary to invest in and exploit the Can Gio - Vam Lang ferry route to increase the capacity of transporting passengers and goods by waterway, contributing to the socio-economic development between the two localities.
