Effective drought resistance, reducing investment costs

Mr. Bui Quoc Viet's large Dona durian garden in Dak Nia commune, Gia Nghia city ( Dak Nong ) is well planned, with about 1,000 purebred trees.

Mr. Bui Quoc Viet in Dak Nia commune, Gia Nghia city (Dak Nong) installed a sprinkler irrigation system to take care of durian.

Realizing the importance of water for durian trees, Mr. Viet invested in a sprinkler irrigation system for the entire area. The system provides adequate water, maintains stable soil moisture and combines fertilization through irrigation, helping the trees absorb nutrients most effectively.

Mr. Viet said that modern irrigation technology provides water and fertilizer evenly, helping plants grow healthily, limiting drought or waterlogging. Applying an automatic irrigation system also helps families reduce labor significantly.

In addition to watering, Mr. Viet also grows grass to keep the soil moist and minimize erosion. This method helps him protect the soil ecosystem, reduce labor costs for care and increase soil sustainability in farming.

According to Mr. Viet, since applying the automatic irrigation system, he no longer worries about plants lacking water or uneven watering like before. Each crop season, he saves significantly on labor costs, irrigation water and crop yields increase significantly.

Thanks to the application of advanced irrigation systems, Mr. Viet's durian garden always maintains high productivity and stable quality, meeting export standards.

Currently, Mr. Viet's durian garden is producing according to VietGAP standards. The durian has better quality, meets export standards, has stable output and high selling price.

“Water and fertilizer are provided sufficiently and promptly according to the growth stages of the plants, without wasting water and only one person is needed to operate the system,” Mr. Viet said about the advantages of the irrigation system.

Similarly, the 1,000-pillar pepper garden of Mr. Nguyen Van Nin's family in Kien Thanh commune, Dak R'lap district (Dak Nong) is equipped with a sprinkler irrigation system. The irrigation system is installed high up, helping to handle weeds without affecting the water lines.

More importantly, on frosty days, this system can also irrigate and wash away the dew, protecting pepper plants from the negative effects of the weather. In addition, during the dry season, he actively leaves natural grass in the garden to keep the soil moist and limit water evaporation.

After a period of application, Mr. Nin assessed that the water-saving irrigation system brought many obvious benefits. Irrigation water was distributed evenly, helping plants grow more stably.

During the dry season, many Dak Nong farmers proactively leave natural grass in their gardens to keep the soil moist and limit water evaporation.

This system helps save time, labor and maintain reasonable humidity for pepper gardens. The initial investment cost is not too high but the economic efficiency is very significant.

“The advanced irrigation system helps me proactively manage irrigation time, without depending on labor, water sources or weather like before,” Mr. Nin shared.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, Dak Nong currently has about 95,000 hectares of crops of all kinds that partially apply high technology. Of which, about 3,200 hectares of crops apply advanced, water-saving irrigation. This area is mainly concentrated in Dak Mil (900 hectares), Dak Glong (700 hectares), Dak Song (450 hectares), Gia Nghia (400 hectares) ...

Need support for replication

Practice in Dak Nong shows that, in the context of complex climate change, the application of advanced and water-saving irrigation technology brings positive effects in agricultural production.

In recent years, Dak Nong's agricultural sector and people have invested in and built advanced irrigation models, water-saving irrigation for coffee, pepper and fruit trees.

The advantages of these models are saving irrigation water, reducing labor costs, and easily applying production processes that meet safe agricultural standards.

According to the assessment of the functional sector, the use of water-saving irrigation systems helps reduce more than 30% of irrigation water and 70% of labor for irrigation.

However, the application of this technology is facing some difficulties due to the high cost of system installation investment, about 40 - 60 million VND/ha.

Dak Nong has only about 3,200/378,000ha of agricultural production applying advanced, water-saving irrigation technology. This is a very low rate, not meeting production requirements in the current context of climate change.

To replicate this model, authorities at all levels need to have appropriate support policies to encourage farmers to invest in irrigation technology.

Specifically, it is necessary to promote so that farmers can access and see the effectiveness of advanced irrigation systems for crops. There are support policies for small-scale producers who do not have enough initial investment resources.

In addition, it is necessary to organize training programs and technical guidance to help farmers understand how to operate and maintain irrigation systems as well as apply irrigation methods suitable for each type of crop.

The relevant authorities need to regularly update information and transfer technology to help farmers access the latest advances in applying technology to agricultural production.

Advanced and modern irrigation technology will help reduce investment costs, save labor and contribute to changing farmers' habits. Thereby, contributing to improving productivity, quality and competitiveness of products in the market.

Applying irrigation technology not only helps farmers improve production efficiency but also contributes to promoting Dak Nong's agriculture sector to develop in a modern, sustainable direction and adapt to increasingly harsh climatic conditions.

Regarding solutions to cope with drought and climate change, Permanent Vice Chairman of Dak Nong Provincial People's Committee Le Trong Yen requested the agricultural sector and people to strengthen and replicate advanced irrigation models and water-saving irrigation.

The application of advanced irrigation systems and modern applications in agricultural production will help farmers easily apply standard agricultural production processes, form large-scale raw material areas, serve processing and export.
