TPO - As the place with the largest natural land area but also the highest poverty rate in Lam Dong, Di Linh district is making efforts to fight drought to green the dry fields and increase productivity.
Synchronously deploy poverty reduction solutions
Mr. Vu Duc Nhuan, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Di Linh District (Lam Dong) said that compared to other districts and cities in the province, Di Linh has 6 "bests", including: Largest natural area, highest proportion of ethnic minorities, largest coffee output, largest number of lakes, most administrative units... "Finally, the highest poverty rate. However, no one wants this and the district always strives to reduce this number", Mr. Nhuan said.
To overcome the above situation, according to Mr. Nhuan, Di Linh has implemented synchronous solutions to effectively implement the national target program for rapid and sustainable poverty reduction. In particular, the district focuses on integrating capital sources, programs, projects, developing and replicating production models.
The locality also synchronously and effectively implemented policies on land, credit, production development, vocational training, value chain construction, social security policies, etc.
Di Linh focuses on investing in inter-commune and inter-village transportation systems and roads to production areas, creating favorable conditions for the transportation of goods and agricultural products.
At the same time, the district continues to invest and support to promote production in remote communes and ethnic minority areas such as Son Dien, Gia Bac, Dinh Lac, Gung Re, Bao Thuan and Dinh Trang Thuong.
The first is to support farmers to change their agricultural production mindset. The relevant departments encourage farmers to change their farming mindset, shifting from traditional agricultural production with productivity and output as the goal, to production with the mindset of taking production value/unit area as the goal.
At the same time, production is directed towards applying high-tech agriculture, ensuring product quality, safety, traceability stamps, VietGAP certification...; intensive investment, application of science and technology, conversion of crop and livestock structure to increase income.
Focus on investing in irrigation projects
Ms. Now Sye Hong Thuyen, Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Di Linh district, said that the departments and functional units of the district have coordinated to research and survey areas and locations where irrigation types such as dams and reservoirs can be developed.
On that basis, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has consulted with the District People's Committee on plans and strategies for developing small-scale irrigation systems; investing in advanced and economical irrigation systems; ensuring proactive water sources for crops and people in all situations, including the driest situations.
Currently, Di Linh is the locality with the largest water surface area for irrigation in the province with 5 hydroelectric lakes, 38 irrigation lakes, and more than 7,000 small ponds and lakes serving agriculture.

As the coffee capital of Lam Dong province, many coffee farmers with large areas have proactively dug reservoirs in their gardens and fields to store water for watering plants during the dry season.
Households growing fruit trees such as avocado, durian or corn (specializing in supplying dairy enterprises) on a large scale also dig ponds to store water.
As one of the pioneers in converting crop structure in Dinh Lac commune, Mr. K'Ren excitedly said: "My family has converted the area of land for single-crop rice cultivation to grow 5 sao of durian and 2 hectares of corn, earning many times more income than before."
During the 6 months of the dry season, rainfall is very low, so the fields and gardens are parched. Mr. K'Ren and neighboring households dug a reservoir, bought a pump to pump water, and invested in an automatic irrigation system to provide enough moisture for the soil, helping plants grow well and avoiding pests and diseases.
“Science and technology are very developed now. We have to proactively apply them to production and cannot rely on the weather like before,” Mr. K'Ren emphasized.
Mr. Trinh Van Dung, Chairman of Gung Re Commune People's Committee, said that many farmers combine aquaculture in ponds and lakes to earn more income, especially cold-water fish.
It is known that Di Linh district has more than 65,000 ethnic minorities living, accounting for over 40% of the population. The average annual poverty reduction rate exceeds the targets set by the Resolution of the District Party Congress for the 2020-2025 term. By the end of 2022, the number of poor households decreased to 1,597, accounting for 3.9%; of which the number of poor ethnic minority households was 1,074, accounting for 6.7%.
