Focus research on 6 programs

The 13th National Party Congress approved the 10-year Socio-Economic Development Strategy for 2021-2030, which sets out the task of “Strongly innovating the mechanism for research activities, science and technology management, innovation, facilitating research and transfer in accordance with the market mechanism, enhancing the autonomy of public science and technology research units. Paying attention to investing properly in basic scientific research; focusing on research and application of core technology and digital technology. Restructuring, improving the capacity and efficiency of research facilities ...”.

Along with the whole country, the Industry and Trade sector is promoting the restructuring of the sector with the orientation of taking science, technology and innovation as one of the breakthrough solutions. The strategy for developing science, technology and innovation in the Industry and Trade sector until 2030 has determined: Research institutes under the Ministry must become core factors in the network of science and technology organizations of the Industry and Trade sector; improve research capacity, become strong research entities, operate under an autonomous mechanism, and take responsibility for themselves...

Sharing with reporters of Industry and Trade Newspaper - Dr. Phan Dang Phong, Director of the Institute of Mechanical Research (Ministry of Industry and Trade) - said that in order to build the Institute of Mechanical Research to meet the above requirements, in recent times, the Institute has promoted the task of restructuring with the goal of improving operational efficiency and competitiveness.

The Institute's orientation by 2030, with a vision to 2045, is to be a leading independent consulting unit in Vietnam, with prestige in the international market, capable of establishing investment projects, technical design and construction drawing design for specialized industrial projects in the Institute's strengths such as: Mechanical manufacturing and assembly lines, thermal power, renewable energy, mineral processing, chemicals, environmental treatment, industrial automation systems, smart warehouses. At the same time, it is capable of being an EPC, EPCM or turnkey general contractor for all equipment items in domestic industrial projects in the Institute's strengths.

Accordingly, the Institute focuses on a number of research programs to develop the entire equipment as follows: First , the research program to develop the entire equipment in the thermal power sector. This program focuses mainly on building mechanisms, policies, and solutions to deploy the mastery of gas thermal power plant equipment technology and the program to upgrade and renovate old thermal power plants to suit new environmental conditions.

Second , the research program to develop complete equipment in the field of construction materials production focuses on building mechanisms, policies, and solutions to deploy and master the technology of equipment for cement factories, surplus thermal power plants in cement factories, and cement warehouse equipment.

Third , the research program to develop comprehensive equipment in the field of new energy and renewable energy focuses on building mechanisms, policies, and solutions to deploy and master the technology of coal-fired and gas-fired thermal power plant equipment and the program to upgrade and renovate old thermal power plants to suit new environmental conditions.

Fourth , the research program to develop comprehensive equipment in the field of bauxite mining and processing focuses mainly on building policy mechanisms and solutions to deploy and master the technology of mineral mining and processing plant equipment.

Fifth , research program to develop complete equipment in the field of agriculture, post-harvest processing of agricultural products.

Sixth , the research program develops complete equipment in the field of waste treatment, power generation from waste and biomass, industrial robots, robot applications and 4.0 technology production lines and products.

Initial successes

Dr. Phan Dang Phong said that in the first program, the Institute is currently developing a policy mechanism to increase the domestic localization rate of domestically invested gas-fired power plant equipment. It is expected to be submitted to the Ministry of Industry and Trade for consideration and approval in 2025.

In addition, the Institute is also investing resources, actively seeking foreign partners to cooperate in order to participate in part in the design and supply of gas thermal power plant equipment in the coming time, focusing on some projects invested in Vietnam such as: Quang Trach 2 Thermal Power Plant, O Mon 3.

In addition, the Institute is also cooperating with JFE – Japan to participate in the design, manufacture and implementation of technical services for a number of biomass power projects in Yen Bai and Tuyen Quang. It is expected that these projects will begin implementation in 2025.

For the second program, the Institute has cooperated with foreign companies to implement a number of power generation projects using residual heat such as at domestic cement factories including: Hoang Mai, Hoang Thach, Bim Son, Nghi Son. Participating in mastering the design and manufacturing technology of these projects will contribute significantly to increasing the localization rate for similar projects in the future, creating jobs and proactiveness in performing maintenance and repair work, creating new jobs for a part of the Institute's staff for at least the next 10 years.

The Institute's engineers are actively working with investors in domestic cement projects to master the repair, replacement and upgrading of equipment and production lines for the cement industry, a job that was previously the privilege of foreign contractors.

With the third program, the Institute has achieved initial successes in manufacturing buoy and anchor systems for solar power projects such as the Da Mi Solar Power Plant Project with a capacity of 47.5 MW, opening up prospects for developing equipment products serving the renewable energy industry with Vietnamese brands. In the coming time, when new projects are approved according to the plan, the Institute will continue to seek partners to implement this field of work to perfect the technology.

Along with that, the Institute is focusing human resources to research offshore wind power projects, especially technologies related to buoy and anchor systems, and technology for manufacturing large parts in harsh environments to meet market needs.

For the fourth program, in the past 2 years, the Institute has implemented a series of new projects according to the industry's development plan such as: Designing the mine infrastructure - selecting the Dakchung bauxite - alumina industrial complex project with a capacity of 1 million tons of alumina/year; preparing a research report on investment opportunities for the Hoa Phat Bauxite - Aluminum Complex project with a designed capacity of 2,000,000 tons of alumina/year and 1,000,000 tons of aluminum/year at the Bac Gia Nghia and Gia Nghia mines, Dak Nong province; preparing a research report on investment opportunities for the An Vien BP Bauxite - Aluminum Complex project with a designed capacity of 2,000,000 tons of alumina/year in Binh Phuoc...

Notably, in the sixth program, the Institute has deployed research and development of high-tech products in the direction of 4.0 technology, focusing on automatic production lines and smart warehouses in line with the development orientation of the digital economy.

For example, the Institute has designed, manufactured, and successfully put into operation an automatic product classification system at a logistics enterprise. This automatic product classification system can operate continuously on an 8-hour shift/day, recording a productivity of about 7,500 products/hour (equivalent to about 60,000 products/day). In fact, at the time of testing and official operation, it was not yet the peak season. According to calculations, if operating at maximum productivity, the system can meet up to 70,000 products/day...
