When can breast implants rupture?
The pregnant woman was pregnant for the third time and went to the hospital because she was in pain and had anxiety. She had breast augmentation 7 years ago. During her pregnancy, she felt pain in her left breast, so she went to the doctor. The doctor determined that the breast implant had ruptured - a rare case during pregnancy. The patient had a large pectoralis muscle, and the rupture occurred in the fibrous capsule formed by inflammation, which helps protect the gel from spreading to surrounding tissues. However, the thick and hard fibrous capsule caused severe pain.
Sharing about this case, cosmetic surgeon Pham Tu, Ha Thanh General Hospital said that currently on the market there are many different brands of breast implants and each brand has products with different prices. Depending on your financial ability, you can make the appropriate choice.
However, there are still some causes that can cause breast implant rupture such as:
Manufacturer's defect in breast implants: The surface of the implant is thinner or has a small hole right from the factory.
During breast augmentation surgery, the breast implant is scratched by a sharp object, creating a weak point on the implant shell.
After a successful breast augmentation surgery, not long after, women accidentally inject or fill their breast tissue to make it bigger by injecting fillers. And during the process of injecting fillers, the needle punctured and punctured the bag shell.
Breast implants left for too long (usually 15 - 20 years or longer) cause the shell material to harden, lose its elasticity, and rupture over time.
To detect early signs of breast implant rupture, Dr. Pham Tu recommends: “Women who have had breast implants should pay attention to symptoms such as: pain in the chest area, changes in breast shape, discomfort when touching with hands. Especially when women self-examine and feel pain or discomfort on one side is different from the other, they should see a doctor as soon as possible.”
Because, if not detected early, a ruptured breast implant can cause dangerous complications. “When we put an implant into the body, the body will form a biological membrane to cover that material. The same goes for breast implants, the breast implant is also a material implanted into the body to increase the volume of the breast, so there is also a thin biological membrane that covers the bag. Normally, this membrane is thin and elastic and feels nothing, but in the case of a ruptured breast implant, this thin layer will react by thickening to prevent silicone from penetrating the surrounding area. Depending on the level, this layer is thick or thin, there may be other phenomena such as capsular contracture or this layer may become fibrotic and calcified at different levels, ... When the fibrotic capsule contracts, it will cause breast deformation and pain for the patient," Dr. Tu further explained.

How often should breast implants be replaced?
Regarding the issue of how often breast implants should be replaced, Dr. Tu said that any material inserted into the body has an expiration date and breast implants are no exception. According to experts, breast implants should be replaced after about 10 years.
Speaking more clearly about the time limit for replacing breast implants, Dr. Pham Tu said: “Women should replace breast implants after a period of time because, after a period of use, the quality of breast implants will decrease compared to the beginning. In addition, over time, the human body will age, the bag may still be good but the aging and sagging breast tissue will no longer be able to hold the bag in its original position and due to sagging, the breast shape will not be as good as it was originally. Therefore, experts recommend replacing breast implants after about 10 years, both to replace with a new bag of better quality and to correct the breast tissue due to the body aging over time.”
This expert further recommends that after placing breast implants, even if there are no unusual symptoms, women should still have a regular health check-up once a year, and need to perform an ultrasound or X-ray to check the condition of the breast implants, in order to detect potential problems early and handle them promptly.
Women should also note that when they need breast augmentation, they should go to reputable medical facilities to be examined and consulted by specialized doctors. In particular, women need to be clearly advised about the implant material, which type of bag to choose, what size, the surgical method (incision, location of the bag, etc.), surgery at a facility licensed for cosmetic surgery, post-operative care, warranty, possible complications, treatment methods, cost, etc.
