During his lifetime, in many positions, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong always had deep affection and special concern for compatriots and soldiers nationwide; especially compatriots in difficult and mountainous areas and soldiers who are day and night protecting the Fatherland on the border and remote islands.

With 80 years of age and 57 years of Party membership, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong is a shining example of revolutionary morality of a communist soldier, a shrewd and intelligent politician, an excellent theorist of the Party; a lifelong devotee to the ideals of national independence and socialism, for the happiness of the people. In many different ways, people across the country have been expressing their respect and condolences to General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

Although he has never met General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong in person, Lieutenant Colonel Pham Tien Diep - Political Commissar of Truong Sa Island, Brigade 146, Naval Region 4, shares the same feelings as millions of Vietnamese people in mourning the passing of the General Secretary.

Soldiers on Truong Sa island held a flag-raising ceremony.

“Since early this morning, I and the soldiers turned on the TV and radio to watch the state funeral of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong,” Mr. Diep said over the phone.

Watching on TV, the emotions and compassion of the soldiers are always full. The soldiers of Truong Sa island in particular and the whole army in general always cherish and remember the General Secretary's feelings and love throughout the years.

“In the hearts of every cadre and soldier in Truong Sa, the General Secretary will forever be a shining example of revolutionary heroism, a noble symbol of a loyal Communist for every cadre and soldier in Truong Sa to learn from and follow,” Senior Lieutenant Colonel Pham Tien Diep shared.

The Central Highlands village mourns the "Elder Brother"

Mr. A. Guch (born in 1950, Ba Na ethnic group, village elder of Kon Ro Bang 2, Vinh Quang commune, Kon Tum city, Kon Tum province) woke up at 5am, turned on the TV in the corner of the house to watch the news of the State funeral of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong. He is old and cannot go to Hanoi to pay his respects to the General Secretary, so he had to wake up very early to watch the TV because he did not want to miss any moment of the State funeral.

Looking at the image of the national flag raised in the middle of Ba Dinh Square with a black ribbon, Mr. A. Guch could not contain his emotions and regret. The memories of the honor of meeting the General Secretary in April 2017 were like a film in the memories of the village elder.

Mr. A. Guch (Ba Na ethnic group, Kon Tum province) was moved when recalling memories of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

Mr. A. Guch (Ba Na ethnic group, Kon Tum province) was moved when recalling memories of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

“In 2017, I was elected by the villagers to be the village elder of Kon Ro Bang 2 and was very fortunate to meet and talk with General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong during his visit to the village. The Ba Na people in Kon Ro Bang 2 village always have special feelings for General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and consider him as the eldest brother of the village,” said Mr. A. Guch.

I still remember that at that time, at the communal house, the General Secretary kindly asked about the villagers, encouraged the families of policy beneficiaries, and those with meritorious services. When the General Secretary visited the village, the economic conditions were still difficult. Seeing that, the General Secretary told the village elders to unite, love each other, help each other more to develop the economy and resolutely fight against hostile forces.

“The day I heard the news of the village’s eldest brother’s passing, my heart felt like it was choking. Although I understand that everyone has to go through birth, aging, sickness and death, the General Secretary’s passing made me unable to hold back my tears,” Mr. A. Guch confided. He still remembers the General Secretary’s gestures, gait, smile and warm words to the villagers.

During that meeting, the village presented the General Secretary with a traditional Hơ Drông shirt of the Ba Na people, a symbol of respect. “Faced with this great loss, I don’t know what to do other than light a stick of incense to bid farewell to my eldest brother,” Mr. A. Guch shared.

Memories only remain in photos

Having the honor of attending the meeting when General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong visited, Mr. Dinh Cong Lon (born in 1957, Muong ethnic group, Luy Ai hamlet, Phong Phu commune, Tan Lac district, Hoa Binh province) said: “At 5 am, my father and I woke up. My son and I brought the national flag, black ribbon and small bamboo that had been prepared since last night, and hung them on the porch.”

Because he was unable to return to Hanoi to pay his respects to General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, Mr. Lon has been anxious all week, wanting to do something to express his respect for the country's outstanding leader. He and his children discussed and decided to hang the flag at half-mast in front of his house to commemorate the General Secretary.

Mr. Dinh Cong Lon reviewed commemorative photos taken during General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong's visit to the locality.

Looking at the national flag hanging on the porch, he recalled 8 years ago when the General Secretary visited and worked with the Party Committee, government and people of all ethnic groups in Tan Lac district.

“The General Secretary was very simple, quick-witted, and went around shaking hands, chatting, and asking about each elderly person and child. The General Secretary kindly asked about the production situation and the lives of the people,” he confided. Eight years have passed, but the people of Luy Ai hamlet still have the same feelings as the day General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong visited.

Sitting absentmindedly by the door of his stilt house, Mr. Dinh Cong Lon held in his hands a photo of the General Secretary visiting and taking a souvenir photo with his family. Many elders in the village also came to Mr. Lon's house today to reminisce about the General Secretary's visit and watch the State funeral on TV.

Hanoi teachers and students tearfully bid farewell to General Secretary

Teachers and students of Luong The Vinh Secondary and High School commemorate General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

Arriving at school earlier than usual, more than 2,100 students and teachers of Luong The Vinh Secondary and High School (Tan Trieu campus, Hanoi) shared the same feeling of grief. Both teachers and students, without being told, all quietly lined up in the middle of the school yard to prepare for the memorial service for General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

Wiping away her tears, teacher Tran Thi Thanh shared that in addition to the memorial service organized by the school, teachers of each subject will have ways to convey to students, helping them understand the great contributions of the General Secretary to the country and the people. That will help them learn lessons about being a good person, studying hard, striving to become good citizens, useful to society.

“What makes the General Secretary loved by the whole country is his personality. We will teach and tell students stories about the General Secretary so that they can see that the General Secretary is a great but extremely close person. All great things are made from the smallest things. I hope that students will follow the General Secretary's example and become responsible people for themselves, for society, for the Fatherland and the people,” teacher Tran Thi Thanh confided.

Patients and doctors unite for the National Funeral

At the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, patients woke up very early to open electronic newspapers and TV to follow the first information and images of the State funeral of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

In the hospital room of the Hepatitis Department, patient Pham Van Hai (Hai Hung Commune, Hai Hau District, Nam Dinh Province) looked out the window, looking into the distance, his heart heavy as he watched the images of the State funeral of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

Since hearing the news, he and the patients being treated at the hospital could not believe it was true, all of them deeply mourned the General Secretary. "This is a great loss for all the Vietnamese people," Mr. Hai said with a choked voice. Although he had never had the opportunity to meet the General Secretary, the General Secretary's important decisions gave Mr. Hai confidence in the Party and in the good things in life.

He admired and appreciated the great contributions of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong to the country until his last breath. "I was very touched to know that despite his poor health, he still did not stop working for the people and the country," said Mr. Hai. The man from Nam Dinh also regretted that his health was not good enough to join the people of the whole country in paying their respects to the General Secretary at the funeral home.

Nearly a week since the passing of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, Ms. Ha Thi Mai Lan (Faculty of Pharmacy) and her colleagues still cannot believe it is true.

“I was very sad and sorry when I heard about the death of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong. Every time I surfed the internet or saw any news related to him, I cried. It felt like I had lost a relative. I deeply miss him, a staunch communist, a simple General Secretary, who devoted himself to the people,” said the female pharmacist.

The female officer of the Tropical Diseases Hospital hopes that the career that Uncle Ho left behind will continue to be inherited and developed so that Vietnam can be strong and the Vietnamese people can be peaceful and happy.

“Later generations will forever be grateful for your sacrifices and contributions to the country. What the General Secretary did was great,” Ms. Lan said emotionally.

Remember the teachings of the General Secretary

Although not a Vietnamese citizen, Mr. KVSR Subbaiah - General Director of KCP Vietnam Co., Ltd. based in Phu Yen, also shared the sadness when hearing the news of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong's passing.

Mr. KVSR Subbaiah said he was present at the company early in the morning, along with the workers, hanging the flag at half-mast and observing a minute of silence in memory of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong. Paying his respects to the passing of the outstanding leader, Mr. KVSR Subbaiah recalled the fortunate memory of having once received and worked with General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong during a visit to the company on May 3, 2016. Although the visit was very short, it left Mr. KVSR Subbaiah with many good impressions.

“When talking, the General Secretary was very interested in the farmers who grow sugarcane and sell sugarcane directly to the factory. The General Secretary advised the company to prioritize and care for farmers first. There should be a policy to treat farmers well so that farmers can stick with the company for a long time. That is also the direction the company has persistently pursued for nearly 10 years,” Mr. KVSR Subbaiah remembered.
