From Michelin stars, Ho Chi Minh City plans to rate restaurants and eateries according to 1-5 star standards

On the morning of June 15, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism and the Ho Chi Minh City Culinary Association held a seminar to exchange and share experiences with the first restaurants and eateries in Ho Chi Minh City listed in the Michelin guide.

At the seminar, restaurants shared their experiences in improving and perfecting their services and promoting Vietnamese cuisine so that tourists are willing to spend more and stay longer in Ho Chi Minh City.

The only restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City with 1 Michelin star

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh Hoa, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism, this is a positive signal for the tourism industry, helping to increase international visitors' awareness of Vietnamese cuisine. This list will encourage international visitors to explore typical dishes, contributing to promoting culinary tourism with the goal of making Vietnam in general and Ho Chi Minh City in particular become attractive destinations in the region.

The Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism said that Vietnamese cuisine has gradually been recognized by international friends, affirming its position on the world culinary map. Ho Chi Minh City is a place where regional cuisines converge throughout the country, and any regional delicacies in the world can be found in Ho Chi Minh City. Therefore, after Michelin's recognition, the Department of Tourism hopes that restaurants and eateries will join hands to build the brand of Ho Chi Minh City as a destination with delicious food.

Specifically, Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh Hoa informed that currently the Department of Tourism, Department of Industry and Trade and other units are in the process of completing a set of criteria to evaluate restaurants and eateries from 1 to 5 stars like hotels.

"The criteria will adhere to international standards so that not only 55 restaurants are honored, but we aim for Ho Chi Minh City to have many restaurants on this list, contributing to attracting and retaining tourists to the city," said Ms. Anh Hoa.

Ho Chi Minh City will pilot 1-5 star ratings for restaurants and eateries.

Mr. Peter Cuong Franklin (owner and chef of the 1 Michelin-starred An An restaurant in District 1) said that with the experience learned from Thailand and Hong Kong, he has organized and promoted the development of Vietnamese cuisine. In the near future, he will share this promotion method with everyone.

"With a rich menu and clean, fresh ingredients in Ho Chi Minh City - the largest city in the country, we will develop Vietnamese cuisine. Besides traditional cuisine, we can expand and combine new elements for the country's cuisine to develop more and more," he shared.

Cuisine will help retain tourists

Mr. Luu Nhat Tuan, Vice President of the Ho Chi Minh City Culinary Association, also informed that the Association is focusing on training and sharing knowledge and management skills for restaurants and small and medium-sized food and beverage businesses to improve quality and promote the city's cuisine.

Previously, on June 6, 2023, Michelin awarded 4 restaurants in Vietnam 1 Michelin star for the first time. Ho Chi Minh City has 1 restaurant with 1 Michelin star; 1 individual received the Michelin Service Award; 38 recommended restaurants and eateries and 16 restaurants with delicious food at affordable prices.
