(NB&CL) Music researcher Dang Hoanh Loan believes that we should not just criticize "Bac Bling" but instead need to have good words for the innovations that renew traditional music.
Just a few days after its release, the MV “Bac Bling” by singer Hoa Minzy has reached millions of views and is in the top 10 trending music categories on YouTube in many countries. The MV is praised for its beautiful frames, highlighting the cultural beauty and landscape of Bac Ninh. In particular, in “Bac Bling”, Quan Ho folk songs are built as an important highlight.
However, despite being widely circulated, this MV also received mixed opinions, even the name “Bac Bling” to refer to Bac Ninh. Other opinions said that this MV has shortcomings and is easygoing. That is, the costumes do not show elegance and grace, there are also incorrect words used, the dance is not true to Quan Ho style...
NB&CL Newspaper had a conversation with music researcher Dang Hoanh Loan about these contents.
+ Sir, in recent days, Hoa Minzy’s MV “Bac Bling” has been continuously causing a stir on social networks, attracting tens of millions of views and probably not stopping yet. Many people believe that “Bac Bling” is so successful because it exploits traditional music elements well. What do you think about this?
- The traditional music that we are preserving is the art of the past, but it is a treasure, because it gives Vietnamese folk music a unique place, a unique image. Traditional music is born from the life of the Vietnamese people, without that heritage, without that treasure, we have no foundation to create a modern Vietnamese music to continue.
Music researcher Dang Hoanh Loan.
Nowadays, young people use traditional music for many different purposes, including creating based on traditional music. This method is called "tempo variation", which means based on a certain musical form to develop into their own musical work. This term is not new, it has appeared in Western music since ancient times, when people took Biblical music to develop into new musical works. Currently, this method is still very popular and loved by audiences.
Another way is to keep the tradition intact but breathe new techniques, vitality, and ideas into it. For example, we can take the original Xam song, take the original Xam melody but play it with Western percussion instruments or use an organ to turn Xam into a contemporary song. That is normal, because people living in this era can completely apply all the techniques, all the knowledge to create a different form of music, without necessarily keeping the traditional performance style.
Personally, I think the success of the MV “Bac Bling” is due to the crew’s ability to absorb traditional music and add new elements to it to present that tradition in a different way. It is the creativity that gives the music more rhythm, more ways of performing, and creates an attractive and engaging musical work.
+ However, there are still opinions that "Bac Bling" focuses on Quan Ho folk songs but is not "standard", some people even think that "Bac Bling" destroys Quan Ho...
- It is necessary for us to preserve ancient Quan Ho and teach Quan Ho in the community. But it is their right for young people to use Quan Ho as a means to create new works with a modern feel. They are not destroying anything here. If there is any destruction, it is because we cannot preserve Quan Ho. I think that the fact that young people know how to rely on tradition to create is a blessing for the nation, a precious thing. In each era, in each historical period, people in that historical period must know how to build for themselves a culture based on the existing traditional culture. It is a succession, but that succession is not horizontal but is an upward path.
I am very happy that today's youth know how to "move", know how to explore the traditional Vietnamese cultural heritage to create new musical works. Only then will traditional music revive in the young generation with works that have a stronger breath of the times. Any musician or artist who is good at developing traditional music, so that traditional music can revive with a modern breath, that person has contributed a great creation. So we should not be quick to criticize. Instead of criticizing, we need to have good words for those creations.
Of course, each person will have a different opinion, but there must be a common point of view, which is that in creativity, we must accept many different ways of doing things.

+ The success of “Bac Bling” is undeniable. However, is this just a temporary “strange dish”?
- “Bac Bling” creates attraction, I consider this a success. Art that is not attractive is useless. Art is not theory. We theorize too much, but art is simply sowing an emotion in people, it is spreading. Any creation that brings the audience vibration, excitement is considered valuable creation. But a work, no matter how high-minded, if it does not create vibration for the target audience, is not necessarily of real value. Real value is how many people sympathize with the work. Obviously, “Bac Bling” has made young people vibrate, that is why they praise it.
However, in Vietnam, there are no major trends, no associations, no style groups, so the creations are only individual; artists and musicians often develop in their own individual ways. This makes musical creations sporadic and fragmented, without forming a lasting style or trend. That is a unique characteristic of our Vietnam, hopefully at some point, this will change.
+ Returning to the issue of exploiting the traditional music capital of “Bac Bling”. In your opinion, should we raise the issue of “dosage” when approaching traditional art?
- Creativity is endless, has no limits. Whether that creativity is accepted by the public or supported by many people is another matter.
+ Thank you!
