From April 22, 2025, principals and vice principals will officially be on summer vacation according to new regulations because there were no clear regulations on this issue before. This is a content in the circular regulating the working regime for general education teachers issued by the Ministry of Education and Training , effective from April 22.

Accordingly, the annual leave of the principal and vice principal includes summer vacation, holidays, Tet and other holidays as prescribed by the Labor Code and the Law on Social Insurance.

The summer vacation time of the principal and vice principal is flexibly arranged during the school year and during the summer vacation period of teachers, in order to maintain the normal operation of the school and promptly carry out tasks summoned by the superior management agency (if any).

This leave schedule must be reported to the competent management authority or according to the hierarchy.

During the school year, principals, vice principals, and teachers of general schools work 42 weeks, of which 37 weeks are spent teaching the contents of the generaleducation program (including 35 weeks of actual teaching and 2 weeks of reserve); 3 weeks of studying and improving qualifications; 2 weeks of preparing for the new school year and summarizing the school year. This is the first time that the summer vacation time of principals and vice principals has been clearly regulated.

In addition to the summer vacation for principals and vice principals, Circular 05 also has a new point compared to before regarding the time off for teachers on maternity leave. Specifically, if the maternity leave coincides with the summer vacation, teachers will be allowed to take additional days off. Teachers will be counted as teaching enough hours according to regulations, and will not have to make up for the time off when taking care of their wives giving birth. However, if this time falls during the summer vacation, teachers will not be allowed to take extra days off.
