According to Dr. Nguyen Huu Quang, Deputy Head of the Department of Aesthetic Surgery & Rehabilitation at the Central Dermatology Hospital, patient DTC, 75 years old, came to the hospital for examination in early February with clinical signs of a black, ulcerated, oozing, and bleeding patch, along with mild pain in the nail area of the third finger of the right hand.
The patient had also sought medical examination and treatment at a healthcare facility, but their condition did not improve.

Patient C. reported that a black lesion on the nail and skin of the third finger of her right hand had been present for a year. However, because it was painless, she ignored it. Over time, the black lesion gradually increased in size, became rough, ulcerated, oozed fluid, and the nail plate was lost.
Six months ago, the patient visited and received treatment at the district hospital, but their condition did not improve.
On February 1st, the patient visited the National Dermatology Hospital for examination. There, after examination and testing, the doctor diagnosed the patient with melanoma of the third finger of the right hand.
"We consulted and determined that the patient needed surgery to remove the cancer and dissect the sentinel lymph nodes. Fortunately, the disease was in an early stage of melanoma, so the patient only needed surgical treatment and follow-up for the next 5 years, without the need for chemotherapy or radiation therapy. After the surgery, the patient's condition is stable and recovering well," Dr. Quang informed.
According to Dr. Quang, melanoma is one of the most aggressive types of skin cancer because it progresses rapidly and metastasizes to distant sites. Although the disease is very aggressive with a high rate of metastasis, if detected early and treated according to the correct protocol, it can be cured, and the 5-year survival rate is very high.
Therefore, when abnormal signs are detected on the skin, patients should seek medical attention early for timely detection, diagnosis, and treatment.
