At a session of the National Assembly's Defense Committee on December 5, Army Commander Park An-su, who was appointed as martial law commander on December 3, said he submitted his resignation to the Defense Ministry on December 4. The ministry is currently reviewing his request.

At the same time, Mr. Park affirmed that he had informed Police Chief Cho Ji-ho about the martial law decree via the former minister's mobile phone as ordered.
During the martial law period ordered by President Yoon Suk-yeol, Army Commander Park An-su requested increased police deployment, and he suggested that security forces not use stun guns and blank bullets to ensure public safety.
On the evening of December 3, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol unexpectedly declared martial law, accusing the opposition of paralyzing the government through impeachment efforts and budget manipulation. This is the first time since 1980 that South Korea has applied this measure.
The declaration of martial law quickly sent shockwaves at home and abroad, marking one of the biggest political crises in South Korea's recent history. Several senior officials, including presidential chief of staff Chung Jin-suk and national security adviser Shin Won-sik, resigned.
In the early morning of December 4, just a few hours after the order was issued, the South Korean National Assembly held an emergency session with 100% consensus, and a resolution requesting the lifting of martial law was passed.
National Assembly Speaker Woo Won Sik stressed: " The declaration of martial law is something no one wants. The National Assembly needs to respond quickly to protect democracy." The South Korean Constitution stipulates that martial law must be lifted if a majority of National Assembly members request it.
At 4:30 a.m. on December 4, President Yoon Suk-yeol announced the lifting of martial law, just six hours after it was imposed. In a speech the same day, he called on the National Assembly to stop “irresponsible” actions and affirmed that he would continue to lead the country during this difficult period.
