Durian exports to China increased 10 times compared to the time before the Protocol. (Source: Industry and Trade Newspaper) |
According to Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen - General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, Vietnam currently has 13 agricultural products officially exported to the Chinese market, including: bird's nest, sweet potato, dragon fruit, longan, rambutan, mango, jackfruit, watermelon, banana, mangosteen, lychee, passion fruit and durian.
“We also expect that after this visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping, the export market for fruits such as frozen durian, fresh coconut, dried coconut, grapefruit, avocado, lemon, etc. will be opened up. Vietnam and China will further strengthen cooperation in the import and export of fruits and vegetables,” Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen expected.
According to Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, in terms of fruit import and export cooperation between Vietnam and China, Vietnam is having a trade surplus.
Regarding durian, Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen said that before 2021, durian exports were only about 200 million USD/year. Since July 2022, Vietnam has signed a protocol on durian exports to this market, and durian exports have accelerated.
In 2022, durian exports reached 420 million USD. It is expected that durian exports in 2023 will reach 2.3 billion USD, a 5-fold increase compared to 2022 and a 10-fold increase compared to 2021. Obviously, thanks to the Protocol, durian exports have achieved such impressive results.
Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen commented that exporting fruit to the Chinese market has more advantages than disadvantages. Specifically, our country is geographically close to China's populous provinces such as Yunnan and Guangxi, which also means a large consumer market. These provinces (Yunnan, Guangxi, etc.) have markets very close to the Vietnamese border. From these markets, goods will be distributed throughout China.
Regarding difficulties, according to Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, China has not signed a protocol with Vietnam on many fruit products. Vietnam has not officially exported many products to China.
“Thailand has officially exported more than 20 products, while Vietnam has only exported 11 products of fruit. Of which, Thailand has exported both fresh and frozen durian, while Vietnam has only exported fresh durian,” Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen cited.
Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen also recommended that the authorities should step up negotiations to open the door and export more fruit products such as frozen durian, fresh coconut, dried coconut, grapefruit, avocado, lemon, etc. to this market. These are products that Vietnam has a large output. For products that have been officially exported but have not signed the Protocol, the state management agency needs to speed up the signing of the Protocol.
The second weakness of Vietnamese agricultural products is that the quality of fruit is not stable. Therefore, Vietnamese farmers need to pay more attention to the quality factor.
“We have only exported fresh durian but the export turnover is almost half that of Thailand, while Thailand exports both fresh and frozen durian. Therefore, there is still a lot of room for Vietnamese durian in the Chinese market,” Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen expected.
According to the Vietnam Trade Office in China, Vietnam ranks 10th among countries exporting agricultural products to China, with export turnover in 2022 reaching over 6 billion USD, accounting for about 2.6% of the total value of agricultural imports of this country.
Regarding fruit and vegetable products, Vietnam is among the top 3 countries with the largest fruit and vegetable export turnover to the Chinese market, after Thailand and Chile.
According to the China Agricultural Outlook Report (2022 - 2031), in 2021, China's vegetable consumption reached 561 million tons, up 0.5%; fruit consumption reached 282 million tons, up 2.5%;...
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development reported that in the past 11 months, China, the US and Japan were the three largest export markets for agricultural, forestry and fishery products from Vietnam. Of which, the Chinese market alone accounted for 23.2%, up 18% over the same period in 2022. China has become the largest customer for these products from Vietnam.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development also said that the two countries are negotiating and will continue to sign a Protocol for coconut products, frozen fruits and watermelons. This opens up great opportunities for exporting Vietnamese agricultural products.
