While taking care of the 17-month-old girl, Nguyen Ngoc Phuong repeatedly beat her to death.

On December 31, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Procuracy issued an indictment to prosecute defendant Nguyen Ngoc Phuong (born 1991) for the crime of "Murder" and transferred the case to the Family and Juvenile Court, Ho Chi Minh City People's Court for trial.
The Family and Juvenile Court is expected to bring the case of abuse that caused the death of a 17-month-old girl to the first instance trial on January 16, 2024.
According to the indictment, Phuong had no job and claimed to babysit. Through social media, Mr. D. saw Phuong post about taking in children. In September 2022, Mr. D. brought H. (17 months old) to Phuong on Huynh Tan Phat Street (Phu My Ward, District 7, Ho Chi Minh City) for 5 million VND/month. Here, in addition to H., Phuong also looked after 4 other children.
In mid-October 2022, Mr. D. called Phuong and said he would come visit and take baby H. out. Phuong said she had to let baby H. stay with her for a month because if she came to pick him up, he would cry and be very difficult to comfort. During this time, baby H. cried a lot, so Phuong beat him many times.
From October 3 to October 6, 2022, baby H. cried and refused to sleep, demanding to be held. Phuong was angry and slapped the baby's cheek, biceps and legs. At noon on November 1, 2022, Phuong tried to put the other babies to sleep, baby H. cried so Phuong grabbed her hand and hit her on the head. Two days later, baby H. cried and refused to drink milk, so Phuong took a milk bottle and hit her on the head.
On the evening of November 6, 2022, Phuong saw that baby H. was acting lethargic and did not respond when called. Thinking that baby H. was choking on food, Phuong patted baby H. hard on the back and squeezed baby H.'s stomach to make baby H. vomit the food, but it did not work. After that, Phuong picked baby H. up, called her husband to take baby H. to the emergency room at Children's Hospital 2 and called Mr. D. to inform him.
On November 8, 2022, baby H. died of a traumatic brain injury. During the investigation, District 7 Police urgently arrested Phuong. Through questioning, Phuong admitted to the above actions.
Regarding civil matters, Phuong's husband has provided 21 million VND in hospital fees and funeral expenses to the victim. Currently, H.'s father has not requested compensation.
