Folk rituals
The ceremony at the Whale Temple (Man Thai Ward, Da Nang City) has been institutionalized for many years by a historical village convention. The phrase in Huong Le reads: "Hiệp toàn dân xã nội" which refers to a communal ritual in which all classes of fishermen participate.
On January 26 every year, the Nghinh Ong worshiping ceremony is now known as the fishing festival, becoming a spiritual and cultural practice of the Da Nang coastal area.
During the festival, people sing Ba Trao - an intangible cultural and artistic form that has been recognized as a national cultural heritage.
After the whale worshiping ceremony, people use folk songs to tell the story of the whale's merit in helping fishermen overcome many challenges and storms to reach shore safely.
The play has many layers, imitating folk songs and dances, depicting the scene of big waves and strong winds through many watches of the night, thanks to the whale leading the way to safety on shore...
In almost all the spring festivals of the coastal villagers with the worshiping ceremony and singing of Ba Trao, the role of the masses - fishermen is the main one. From the chief priest, the priests to the Trao Tu and the audience, all are local residents. The creativity on the spot is extremely touching and attractive...
Community nuances
People from the Eastern Quang region have just attended the biggest village festival in early spring here, the Co Ba Cho Duoc festival. This is a folk festival that has existed for more than a century, gathering thousands of people to pray for a peaceful new year.

The Lady's palanquin procession is an art form through folk performances of a community nature. At the same time, it contains many spiritual, cultural, artistic, sculptural, visual, theatrical, customary and ritual values.
“Cồ” means “palanquin”, the artisans decorate a palanquin to carry during the ceremony. Carrying the Lady’s palanquin is using the palanquin to welcome the Lady, to welcome her royal decree, around the market and the surrounding area.
Many local folklore researchers also call the market Duoc, meaning “Dac Thi”. In addition to being a divine deity, the people of Dong Thang Binh have long considered her as the founder of the market Duoc, also known as Ba market - one of the three largest markets in Quang Nam since ancient times...
Another unique thing about the village festival is the solidarity of thousands of people. Before the Le Ba festival, sometimes a month, depending on the theme each year, people from the villages in the area contribute money and effort to make flower float models and perform for the main festival night. Thanks to this community spirit, the Co procession nights often attract tens of thousands of people to attend.
Village festivals are always attractive.
Looking back at the two January village festivals, it is the folk cultural nuances of Quang Nam that create a sense of community from the participation of the masses.
With the endless creativity of the people, the village festival has never ceased to be attractive. The festival carries within it the pride of the village, and more broadly, the homeland. This is what nourishes the soul of the whole community.
Folklore researcher Nguyen Hung Vi said that villages without festivals may be rich but they are not necessarily stable. There are about 7,000 festivals nationwide, of which the majority are village festivals. The “festival value system” has many aspects, but above all, festivals still have the greatest value of community cohesion.
The communal cultural character of Quang Nam can also be found in the Cau Bong festival in Tra Que, the Shepherd festival in villages throughout Quang Nam and the Ky Yen ceremonies in village communal houses...
“What belongs to the people will last forever.” This saying is probably suitable for the New Year festivals in Quang Nam!
