The Lao New Year is called Bunpimay, the biggest water festival of the year for Lao people, also known as the "Wrist-tying" festival, or the "Bun-hot-nam" festival. The unique feature of Bunpimay is the custom of splashing water on each other. This originates from the Lao belief that only water brings life and water will wash away all evil worries to revive, bringing purity and luck. In addition to the water-splashing custom, during Bunpimay, Lao people have many community activities held in temples or at home such as bathing Buddha statues, wrist-tying ceremony, animal release ceremony, blessing ceremony for parents and grandparents...
