Mixed opinions
It is expected that in mid-November 2023, Bui Thi Xuan High School (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City) will organize for 10th grade students to watch the play "Love is to escape crime" at the theater.
After watching the play, students do a group assignment, each group has about 8-10 students. This assignment is graded on a 10-point scale. In which, the content of the play (3 points); beautiful design (3 points); posting on Facebook and personal Zalo with over 100 "likes" (2 points) and the number of shares on personal page reaching 50 or more (2 points).
In response to the above information, some opinions said that grading assignments based on interactions on Facebook and Zalo is inappropriate. This puts pressure on students, who, in order to get good grades, must ask people to like and share them.
Not to mention, social networks are virtual. The group with more friends and relatives will have a higher interaction rate, so it will not be possible to evaluate the students' abilities... There are other opinions that this is a form of "like-baiting" for the school.
On the other hand, there are still opinions in favor of this approach.
Dinh Xuan Thai Huy - a student of class 11A6, Bui Thi Xuan High School - shared that last year he went through this exercise and found it quite interesting.
"The score of the assignment is not 100% taken from the number of "likes" and "shares" (70% from teachers, 30% from social networks). Students still need skills and knowledge from their own experiences and from the play to get good scores from teachers," Huy shared.
According to the male student, participating in extracurricular activities and sharing articles on personal pages helps students become more interested in studying, as well as creating a more youthful environment.
VH's opinion is: "This is also a way for children to confidently write their feelings after watching the play, on social networks. It both promotes and lets others know more about the play. Actually, clicking "like" or "share" is not something that makes parents uncomfortable. Everyone wants to share the joy of being a parent with the products their children make. Personally, I support it."
LL's parents expressed that it is best to get the students' opinions, because this is the way the children choose, not the parents or the school decides. Therefore, please respect the students' feelings about this.
Just bonus points
In response to online debates, Mr. Huynh Thanh Phu - Principal of Bui Thi Xuan High School - said that the school has been organizing for students to watch plays, operas, movies, etc. for the past 7 years. Therefore, he has had 19 experiences (in different courses and classes) watching plays with students.
The principal said he saw many positives from this activity.
When planning for 10th grade students to see the play "Love and Escape", Mr. Phu and the literature teacher previewed the content and assessed that this was a very suitable play for students.

He said the school only encourages students to go to the movies voluntarily, not compulsory. The ticket price is 65,000 VND/student, much lower than buying tickets at the theater.
Regarding grading, after watching the play, students will write a 1-2 minute clip review. The grade will be used by the teacher as a bonus or incentive score (1-2 points) and not as an official score.
Therefore, students who do not participate are not affected because they can get bonus points from expressing opinions in class, interacting with teachers and other activities in school, class, doing good work...
"This is just an incentive and sharing on social networks is a very small factor, it will not affect or put any pressure on students," Mr. Phu commented.
Explaining the requirement to "like" and "share" on social networks, Principal of Bui Thi Xuan High School said that this is an important skill of the digital age that students need to have. It is the skill of interacting with the outside world using technology.
Through this, student groups will have their own ways to attract others to their products; ways to convey content, messages... to spread the product.
In addition, the school also aims to develop students' comprehensive qualities and abilities. The lessons help to form and train students in many other skills such as: Teamwork, literary appreciation, the use of images, sounds, music, reading commentary...
In response to parents' complaints that social networks are virtual, that the number of "likes" and "shares" is not necessarily real, and that you can spend money to buy interactions..., Mr. Huynh Thanh Phu said that this is just a small playground in the school with the most important purpose of guiding students to use social networks in a civilized manner.
This also helps to share a traditional form of national culture that is gradually fading away.
"I think people should not look at it in a negative way. This is just a very small playground, you cannot spend money to buy "likes" or "shares" just for 1-2 bonus points.
We should not guide students in this way, but must believe in the way we do things, believe in the students, believe in the honesty of our children and sow good seeds," the school leader commented.
Mr. Huynh Thanh Phu added that the current general orientation is how to guide students and young people in using social networks in a civilized manner.
While organizing a good play for students, it is a good idea to let them write their feelings, share their views and perceptions about the work of art from a youthful perspective.
In fact, over the past 7 years, he has received many very good and touching student testimonials.
"There are many student essays that surprise teachers with the level of artistic appreciation and fresh perspectives of young people. Therefore, I hope parents will trust the school's educational methods," emphasized Principal of Bui Thi Xuan High School.
