Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School in the Heritage House of Vietnam Revolutionary Journalism

Việt NamViệt Nam08/08/2024

We, the people working at the Vietnam Journalism Museum, are honored to directly approach the witnesses and make a dossier on the Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School. From the time of making the dossier to demarcate the relic to the inauguration of the relic stele, it was a long journey, requiring a lot of effort and dedication.

National historical site Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School was built on an area of 859m2 , including many important items.

From the idea of journalist Phan Huu Minh

I came to work at the Vietnam Press Museum in 2017. I remember the first time I met journalist Phan Huu Minh, Standing Member of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Journalists Association, Head of the Inspection Committee of the Vietnam Journalists Association, he patted me on the shoulder: "Vu, we must erect a monument stele of the Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School in Dai Tu, Thai Nguyen to feel secure". The peace of mind that Mr. Minh mentioned, in my opinion, is peace of mind with history, with the predecessors, with the depth of journalism training in our country. The first class of 42 students spread out to all battlefields, all roads of the country to report on the war, encourage people to unite to fight the enemy, and build Vietnam...

We started collecting artifacts of journalists who were students of Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School, and interviewed each living person. I still remember, on October 31, 2017, I and comrade Tran Kim Hoa, Director of the Vietnam Journalism Museum, along with Nguyen Van Ba, museum staff, went to the house of Mr. Tran Kien, former Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper. The meeting there was Ms. Pham Thi Mai Cuong, Ms. Ly Thi Trung and Ms. Dung, wife of Mr. Tran Kien. Everyone seemed to return to their youth, from stories about studying and living at the journalism school in that war zone, the feelings of couples, funny stories about dishes like braised eggplant, making wall newspapers...

Ms. Mai Cuong recounted, her eyes still shining with pride: "In the classroom, three women sat at the front desk, so when the teacher came to teach or the leaders visited the class, they were all the first to shake hands, which was very proud compared to the men". Ms. Ly Thi Trung confided: "Back then, the kitchen kept feeding us eggplant dishes, from eggplant soup to eggplant stewed with shrimp paste, grilled and steamed in all kinds of ways, until we were so bored that we didn't want to eat them". Mr. Kien calmly said: "Although it was difficult and arduous, everyone was eager to equip themselves with journalism knowledge to serve the Fatherland and serve the people".

Many times when visiting journalist Pham Viet Thieu, he confided that after finishing school, he went to practice interviewing comrade Vo Nguyen Giap, he was so nervous that he forgot all the questions, thanks to Mr. Giap's calmness and encouragement, he was able to complete the task. He said that the dormitories for male and female students were separate, the houses were thatched, the tables and chairs were made of split bamboo and arranged in order of height towards the back.

The photos, articles, and lists of filming sessions about the characters... are getting thicker and thicker. This is the basis for us to gradually complete the dossier, delimit the relic site, and submit it to the relevant agencies for consideration and recognition. By chance, we saw a report broadcast on VTV1 describing the process of several decades of searching for the site, in which journalist Huu Minh was the main contributor, and we were even more motivated and determined to get involved.

To the determination of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Journalists Association

The Central Committee of the Vietnam Journalists Association is determined to prepare a dossier for the competent authorities to recognize the Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School as a national relic. When the Vietnam Journalists Association has a document assigning the Vietnam Press Museum to coordinate with the agencies of Thai Nguyen province to complete the dossier to demarcate the relic, it is the first step towards applying for recognition as a national relic.

Nguyen Van Ba and I were assigned by comrade Tran Kim Hoa, Director of the Vietnam Press Museum, to coordinate with professional staff of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Thai Nguyen province to closely follow the establishment of the dossier to delimit the relic site. In fact, to do this, we had to travel to the base a lot.

The area of the former Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School is now mostly located under Nui Coc Lake, the remaining part is located in Tan Thai Commune (Dai Tu). After measuring, we determined the coordinates of the relic area, drew a map... a very important task for the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to recognize it as a national relic.

Once, when the delegation of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Journalists Association, including Comrade Nguyen Gia Thuy, Chief of Office and Comrade Phan Huu Minh, Head of the Inspection Committee, went to Tan Thai commune. In the afternoon, the delegation had to return to Hanoi for urgent business, so I volunteered to stay behind to request 8 stamps on the map of the area from commune, district to province. When the land plot was determined, the measurement, stake setting, leveling... were all done very thoroughly and in accordance with the procedures.

And then that day came. When we heard the news that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism had signed a decision to recognize Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School as a national monument, we were all filled with joy...

The first journalism school has a "red address"

After 5 years of preparation, in early 2024, the groundbreaking ceremony and handover ceremony of the project to restore and embellish the National Monument of Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School will be held by the Vietnam Journalists Association, the Provincial Party Committee, and the People's Committee of Thai Nguyen province on August 9, 2024, in Tan Thai commune (Dai Tu).

Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School in the Heritage House of Vietnam Revolutionary Journalism Delegates performed the groundbreaking ceremony to start the project to restore and embellish the National Historical Site of Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School (January 18, 2024).

This is an important political event, opening a series of activities to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day (June 21, 1925 - June 21, 2025). The event contributes to turning the national relic site of Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School into a "red address", fully promoting the historical value of revolutionary journalists, promoting propaganda and promoting the construction and economic development in the former war zone.

Within the framework of practical activities towards the 100th Anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day, the Vietnam Press Museum in collaboration with the Management Board of the National Historical Site of Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School, Tan Thai Commune People's Committee and Nhi Van Media organized the program "Media, practical experience: History and heritage of Vietnam Revolutionary Press".

Journalist Tran Thi Kim Hoa, Head of the Vietnam Press Museum, shared: The program aims to effectively carry out propaganda activities, widely introducing to the public at home and abroad the invaluable heritage of the Vietnamese Revolutionary Press that generations of journalists have strived to build and develop. Through the program, the Vietnam Press Museum hopes that journalists nationwide, the general public, especially the young generation, students, and pupils will better understand the National Historical Site of the Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School, contributing to the enrichment of scientific knowledge of history and culture...

The relics will then be made public and displayed solemnly at the place where 75 years ago the Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School was located. The vivid evidence of this national historical relic is a priceless traditional educational document about patriotism and the glorious tradition of Vietnam's revolutionary press.
