"Giant" Hanoi University of Science and Technology has yet to meet the standards of higher education institutions regarding the criteria of land area/student - Photo: HUST
According to the standards of higher education institutions of the Ministry of Education and Training, from 2030, the average land area per full-time student must not be less than 25m², and the floor area for training per full-time student must not be less than 2.8m². However, currently, many schools have a very low average land area per student.
Land: 0.92m²/university student
The universities that Tuoi Tre Online has collected statistics on show that most of them currently have very low land area/student. Many schools are only 1/20 of the 2030 standard. Not only private schools but also many large universities, members of national universities, regional universities, and national key universities all have very modest land area/student.
This area includes dormitories, rented facilities, joint facilities, and school facilities but is hardly used for training.

Notable among these are a series of long-standing universities in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. In a recent training conference on implementing university education standards, when the Ministry of Education and Training invited a representative from Hanoi University of Science and Technology to present a paper on comparing the ministry's standards, the hall was filled with whispers: "Following in the footsteps of giants".
However, even the school considered a "giant" in the university education system still does not meet the land area standards. The average land area per student of Hanoi University of Science and Technology is currently only 7.4m² (three public 2022-2023).
"There are only 6 years left to apply this standard. Schools must fight for the Government and localities to allocate land for higher education, invest in schools, and class after class. This is a special public service, and investment is required. America and Europe are vast, not to mention the schools. Schools in Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines are also very large.
Hanoi University of Science and Technology currently has an area of 26 hectares in the center of Hanoi. Land in the center of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City is calculated with a coefficient of 2.5, so the average land area of the school is about 14.6m²/student. Compared to the standard, it is still very low. The school must expand its campus, at least about 20 hectares more to meet the standard" - Mr. Vu Van Yem, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, assessed.
Statistics show that there are currently many schools with land area/student that is only about 1/20 of the standard. The school with the lowest land area/student in our statistics is the Banking Academy training facility in Son Tay town with only 0.925m²/student.
Floor area exceeds standard
While the land fund of schools is still limited, the construction of schools to serve training has improved significantly compared to the standard. In terms of construction floor area, most schools now meet or exceed the standard.

However, since the standard is only 2.8m², it is not surprising that many schools meet it. What is strange is that there are some schools that do not meet this standard. Notably, all three schools that we counted with floor area below the standard are public schools.
"The requirement of only 2.8m² is strange to me. When it is mentioned abroad, people laugh at it. At Hanoi University of Science and Technology, the construction floor area is 7.1m²/student, far exceeding the standard, but I still think it is too cramped. The experience space for students and the working space for lecturers are too cramped. But many schools complain about 2.8m², so I have to accept it" - Mr. Vu Van Yem expressed his opinion.
