Editor's note:

The Ministry of Justice has just announced the appraisal documents of the draft and the submission of the Resolution of the National Assembly Standing Committee on the arrangement of administrative units.

According to the criteria for the arrangement, it is expected that 11 provincial-level administrative units will remain the same nationwide, including: Hanoi, Hue, Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Son La, Cao Bang, Lang Son, Quang Ninh, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh. The remaining provinces and cities will be reviewed and rearranged to streamline the apparatus and improve management efficiency. VietNamNet reviews the economic potential of some localities to better understand the position, advantages and resilience of each region in the overall development picture of the whole country.

At the recent scientific conference celebrating the 95th anniversary of the founding of the City Party Committee (March 28) and the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of Da Nang City (March 29), Mr. Nguyen Van Quang - Secretary of the Da Nang City Party Committee - mentioned that Quang Nam and Da Nang will soon be "under one roof".

At that time, he believed that a new vision and new approach were needed to strongly promote the potentials and advantages of a new city.

So, before "coming under one roof", what was the economic scale of Quang Nam province and Da Nang city over the years?

Currently, both of these localities are located in the key economic region of the Central region.

According to the General Statistics Office, the scale of GRDP (gross regional product) at current prices in 2024 of Quang Nam province will reach 129,000 billion VND, an increase of 7.1% compared to 2023 and ranked 25th in the GRDP scale ranking of 63 provinces and cities in our country.

Meanwhile, the GRDP scale of Da Nang City in 2024 will reach 151,307 billion VND, an increase of 7.51% compared to 2023 and enter the top 17 on the GRDP scale ranking of 63 provinces and cities.

Compared to 2019, the scale of GRDP in 2024 of Quang Nam province increased by 30%, while Da Nang had an increase of 36.1%.

Notably, in the 2019-2024 period, the GRDP scale of both Da Nang and Quang Nam generally tends to increase over the years, except for 2020, which recorded negative growth compared to the previous year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In addition, in 2023, Quang Nam's GRDP also decreased compared to 2022.

Regarding GRDP per capita , according to statistics in 2023, Da Nang reached 107.8 million VND/person/year, 4.9 million VND higher than the national average.

However, compared to the level of 97.4 million VND/person/year (2019), the city's average GRDP per capita in 2023 will only increase by 10.5 million VND, equivalent to an increase of 10.7%.

Quang Nam's average GRDP per capita in 2023 will reach 76.3 million VND/person/year, 26.6 million VND lower than the national average and 31.5 million VND lower than Da Nang.

However, compared to 2019, the average GRDP per capita in Quang Nam in 2023 increased by 15.6%, higher than the 10.7% increase in Da Nang.

In terms of attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) , both of these localities only stop at a rather modest number compared to provinces and cities such as Nghe An, Thanh Hoa, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi...

Of which, in 2023, Quang Nam only reached 58.6 million USD in FDI capital, far lower than the 156.6 million USD in 2019.

As for Da Nang, FDI capital reached 202.8 million USD in 2023, nearly 3.5 times higher than Quang Nam. However, this capital source of Da Nang in the same year decreased sharply by 53.7% compared to 438 million USD in 2019.

Regarding domestic budget revenue , statistics up to 2023 show that Quang Nam will reach nearly 21,626 billion VND, down about 18.9% compared to 2022, but recording an increase of 13.9% compared to 2019.

Similarly, Da Nang's domestic budget revenue in 2023 will only reach VND 18,236 billion, a slight decrease of 2.6% compared to 2022 and a sharp decrease of 22.3% compared to VND 23,469 billion in 2019.
