The number of top scientists in the US is declining, while the corresponding number in China is increasing, according to new data from a Chinese company.
The South China Morning Post reported today, January 17th, citing a new report from Shenzhen-based data technology company Dongbi Data, that China has surpassed the United States for the first time in the number of high-level science and technology experts.
Analyzing data over the five years from 2020-2024, the report also shows that the number of top scientists in China has increased, while the corresponding number in the US has decreased. The report was published on January 11th.

The report states that there were 36,599 of the world's top scientists in the US in 2020, but this number has decreased to 31,781 by 2024. During that time, the percentage of American scientists in the global talent pool has fallen from nearly 33% to 27%.
Conversely, the number of top scientists in China increased from 18,805 in 2020 to 32,511 in 2024, with their share in the global talent pool rising from 17% to 28%.
According to the new report, "high-level scientific and technological talent" is defined as any researcher who has published influential papers in leading international journals.
The research team behind the new report from Dongbi Data reviewed more than 40,000 highly cited and published articles from 2020-2024 across 129 leading international academic journals in various fields, then extracted information about the authors and cross-referenced the data, according to the South China Morning Post .
There has been no official comment from the US or China on the report.
