The number of top scientists in the US is falling, while the corresponding number in China is rising, according to new data from a Chinese company.
The South China Morning Post today, January 17, cited a new report from Shenzhen-based data technology company Dongbi Data, affirming that China has surpassed the US for the first time in the number of high-level science and technology experts.
Analyzing data for five years from 2020 to 2024, the report also found that the number of top scientists in China has increased, while the corresponding number in the US has decreased. The report was released on January 11.

The report said there were 36,599 of the world's top scientists in the US in 2020, but that number dropped to 31,781 in 2024. During that time, the share of US scientists in the global talent pool fell from nearly 33% to 27%.
In contrast, the number of top scientists in China increased from 18,805 in 2020 to 32,511 in 2024, with its share of the global talent pool increasing from 17% to 28%.
According to the new report, “high-level scientific and technological talent” is defined as any researcher who has published influential papers in the world’s top journals.
The research team behind the new report from Dongbi Data looked at more than 40,000 highly cited articles published between 2020 and 2024 in 129 leading international academic journals across a range of fields, then extracted information about the authors and collated the data, according to the South China Morning Post .
There has been no official comment from the US or China on the above report.
