The new statistics are based on preliminary data from the Nature Index - a statistical table of the scientific journal Nature that tracks research published in 82 journals in many different fields of natural sciences, including chemistry, environmental and Earth sciences, life sciences and physical sciences, SCMP reported on May 23.
The data includes the world's top peer-reviewed journals such as Cell, Nature, Science and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America . The complete dataset for 2022 is expected to be released next month.
In 2022, in addition to becoming the country that contributed the most research published in top scientific journals, China also for the first time overtook the United States in contributions to environmental and Earth sciences, although it still ranked behind in the field of life sciences.
China's contributions have been steadily increasing since the Nature Index was launched in 2014. The index takes into account the percentage of authors from a country in each published study. In 2022, China contributed nearly 19,400, while the US had 17,610.
During 2018-2020, China contributed 27.2% of the world's most cited research papers - those in the top 1% in terms of number of citations - while the US accounted for only 24.9%, according to the "Japan Science and Technology Indicators" report.
However, the US has nearly 790 contributions to two major journals, Nature and Science , significantly higher than China's 186. China also ranks behind the US in the number of studies with at least one domestic author. Specifically, China has 23,500 of these studies, while the US has nearly 25,200.
China is the world's second-largest spender on scientific research, with spending on research and development expected to exceed 3 trillion yuan ($426.6 billion) by 2022, according to the National Bureau of Statistics of China.
