Yesterday (December 27), the South China Morning Post reported that China will begin operating the new generation CR450 high-speed train next year. Recently, images of the train were leaked from a video clip showing it traveling from Tianjin to Beijing in preparation for operation.
With test speeds reaching up to 450 km/h, the CR450 train can achieve speeds of 400 km/h in real-world operation, making it the world's fastest high-speed passenger train. Leaked images also show the CR450 train has 8 carriages, with a multi-angled arrow-shaped design.

According to official data, the CR450's hull weighs approximately 10 tons, 12% lighter than the current CR400 model. Energy consumption has decreased by 20%, while braking performance has increased similarly. These improvements increase commercial operating speeds by an additional 50 km/h without affecting braking distance, noise levels, or energy efficiency. The CR450 achieved a record speed of 453 km/h in performance testing conducted last June.
The CR450 project is part of China's 14th Five-Year Plan, an initiative that also includes upgrading high-speed rail infrastructure such as tracks, bridges, and tunnels. The Chengdu-Chongqing line, built to higher standards, is considered the priority railway line for the CR450 to operate at its maximum design speed. Meanwhile, the Beijing-Shanghai line is deemed to need upgrading to ensure the CR450 can operate safely at its highest speed.
Today, China's high-speed rail system is the world's largest operational network, covering more than 45,000 km.
