According to China Central Television (CCTV), on the morning of May 1, 19 people were killed after part of a highway in Guangdong province, southern China, collapsed.
According to local authorities, about 30 people were taken to the hospital for emergency treatment and are currently in stable condition, with no life-threatening injuries. The incident occurred at around 2:10 a.m. on May 1 (local time), on a section of the Mai Chau-Dai Bo Expressway in Mai Chau, Guangdong Province, causing 18 vehicles to be stuck.
Police have closed off part of the highway in both directions and asked drivers to divert. About 500 people are involved in the rescue effort. Authorities are investigating the cause of the incident.
In a statement, local authorities said they had blocked part of the highway where the accident occurred in both directions and asked drivers to change direction.
In recent weeks, Guangdong province has suffered a series of extreme weather events including severe flooding and deadly tornadoes.
