An illegal meteorological observation post in China.
In a statement issued on October 31, China's Ministry of State Security said that several meteorological monitoring points have been set up around military units and enterprises in the defense industry. Other monitoring points are located in major grain-producing areas, related to the analysis of crop growth and grain yields, according to Reuters.
The statement said that some meteorological observation points even transmit real-time information to overseas government meteorological agencies at a high frequency. China's Ministry of State Security warned that these observation points pose a "potential threat to national security."
According to the statement, Chinese national security agencies, along with meteorological and security agencies, promptly blocked the transmission of the country's meteorological data abroad after an investigation.
Authorities have investigated more than 10 dealers importing meteorological equipment from abroad and inspected over 3,000 meteorological sites linked to foreign companies in a nationwide crackdown on such sites.
China stated that the foreign parties involved (unnamed) did not have administrative permits for their operations, did not submit meteorological data to the Chinese meteorological agency, and transmitted data abroad without permission.
