An illegal meteorological monitoring site in China

In a statement issued on October 31, the Ministry of State Security said some meteorological monitoring points were set up around military units and defense industry enterprises. Other monitoring points were located in major grain production areas, involved in analyzing crop growth and grain yield, according to Reuters.

Some meteorological monitoring stations even transmit real-time information to overseas government meteorological agencies at a high frequency, the statement said, warning that these monitoring stations pose a “potential risk to national security.”

China's national security agencies, together with meteorological and security authorities, promptly blocked the transmission of the country's meteorological data abroad after an investigation, the statement said.

Authorities have investigated more than 10 dealers of meteorological equipment imported from abroad and inspected more than 3,000 foreign-related meteorological sites in a nationwide crackdown on such sites.

China said the unnamed foreign parties involved did not have administrative permits for their operations, did not submit meteorological data to China's meteorological authorities, and transmitted data abroad without permission.
