(CLO) On December 31, China denied accusations that it was involved in a cyber attack on the US Treasury Department, calling them "baseless accusations".

China has denied allegations of involvement in a cyber attack on the US Treasury Department. The Chinese Foreign Ministry said Beijing "has always opposed all forms of hacker attacks, and we also firmly oppose the spreading of disinformation against China for political purposes."

"We have repeatedly made clear our stance on such groundless and evidence-lacking accusations," said foreign ministry spokesman Mao Ning.

According to a letter from the US Treasury Department to Congress, the hackers accessed some workstations through a third-party cybersecurity service provider.

The attack, which occurred in early December, allowed hackers to access workstations and unclassified documents. The Treasury Department contacted the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) to assess the impact and coordinate with law enforcement. The compromised service has been taken offline. There is no evidence that hackers have continued to access the system.

The US Treasury Department said the attack was carried out by a Chinese state-sponsored APT actor. APT is a term used to describe long-term, sophisticated, and difficult-to-detect cyberattacks.
