Agricultural exports to the Chinese market grow by double digits. Phones and components lose their position as the largest export group to China. |
According to the General Department of Customs, as of mid-May 2024, our country has spent 725.6 million USD to import fruits and vegetables to serve domestic consumption needs.
In 2023, Vietnam spent nearly 2 billion USD on imports, of which apples were the most imported item. |
In 2023 alone, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable imports will reach 1.96 billion USD. Accordingly, China is the largest market supplying fruit and vegetable products to Vietnam with an import turnover of 794.7 million USD, down 7.4% over the same period last year. In 2023, goods from China accounted for 40.5% of our country's total fruit and vegetable imports.
The US ranked second, with import turnover reaching 331.5 million USD, down 7%. Next was the Australian market, with import turnover reaching 142.4 million USD, down 10% compared to 2022. In the total import turnover of fruits and vegetables of Vietnam in 2023, US and Australian goods accounted for 16.9% and 7.3% respectively.
In terms of goods, apples were the most imported item in 2023, reaching 237.1 million USD, accounting for 21.8% of the total fruit import turnover. Grapes ranked second, reaching 158.4 million USD, accounting for 14.6% of the total fruit import turnover. Tangerines and pears ranked 3rd and 4th, accounting for 7.1% and 5% respectively.
These are all fruits with quite low prices. Especially grapes, not only imported from the United States, Australia, Korea, ... but also Chinese grapes flooded the domestic market at very cheap prices. When this billion-people country expanded its growing area, milk grapes immediately covered the Vietnamese market at very affordable prices.
The fruits imported from Vietnam are currently mainly those that Vietnam is not strong in. For example, Vietnam cannot grow apples and pomegranates, or grapes and pears have growing areas but the output is still modest, so they must be imported to meet domestic consumption demand.
In addition, the fruits that top the import list are mostly in the low-priced segment, originating from China with large output, so they are imported very quickly. This is also the reason why apples, grapes, tangerines and pears are always imported to Vietnam in large quantities every year.
