According to an announcement from Hiep Hoa Hospital, the special surgery led by Professor Dong Niem Quoc used a biventricular assist device using magnetic technology, weighing only 45 grams and measuring 2.9cm in diameter - the smallest and lightest ever implanted globally.
The surgery lasted 5 hours. Just one day after the surgery, the patient was able to breathe on his own again, and after 5 days was transferred to an isolation room for monitoring.
Currently, the patient's heart function is recovering stably, and vital signs are normal.
According to Xinhua, about 40,000 children in China are hospitalized with severe heart failure each year, of which about 10% need heart transplants. However, the number of surgeries performed currently is still less than 100 per year.
